Alien Invasions, Killer Dogs, and Ben Affleck: This Week’s Netflix Additions

Where to Stream:

Knights of Sidonia

Powered by Reelgood

If you happen to get some down time in between all of the barbecues and family gatherings this 4th of July weekend, here are some brand new Netflix additions to suit your moods.

MOVIE: Bottled Up (2013) *Available July 5th
WATCH IT BECAUSE: You’ve spent the weekend with family and now you want to watch a movie about a family that’s more dysfunctional than yours.

Faye (Melissa Leo) is a middle-aged, single mother in denial about her daughter’s pain killer addiction. She meets Beckett (Josh Hamilton), who seems to be her ticket out of the misery of home, but Faye is torn between her family and possibly finding happiness for the first time.

MOVIE: Cujo (1983)
WATCH IT BECAUSE: You’ve never gotten the chance to see the Steven King horror classic and only know of it from Friends and Phoebe’s mom.

If you have a pup this is probably one you can skip, especially if it’s a St. Bernard. Cujo’s evil nature wasn’t necessarily his fault, since he was bitten by that rabid bat. Yet, the sympathy kind of dissolves as you watch him terrorize a town by tearing off people’s limbs.

MOVIE: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
WATCH IT BECAUSE: It’s one of those classic horror films that you’ve never had the chance to watch until now.

Don Siegel’s (Dirty Harry) depiction of Jack Finney’s novel The Body Snatchers has inspired countless sci-fi and horror films. True to its title, the film follows those who believe that their loved ones have been taken over by alien impostors.

MOVIE: Jersey Girl (2004)
WATCH IT BECAUSE: You’re wasted from playing the All-American Independence Day drinking game and want something light and carefree to watch next.

Sure it’s a rom-com starring Ben Affleck, but it’s a Kevin Smith rom-com starring Ben Affleck. Not of the same caliber as Smith’s Chasing Amy (also on Netflix)—after all, it did receive a couple of Razzie awards—but it’s still super fun and interesting to see Smith’s take on romantic comedies.

SHOW: Knights of Sidonia Season 1 (2014)
WATCH IT BECAUSE: It’s a brand-new anime series from Netflix.

Based on the manga of the same name, Netflix has claimed the successful Japanese anime series at its own. The futuristic story follows the knights and guardians who protect the city of Sidonia after humans have fled Earth after an alien invasion.
