Donald Sutherland’s Creepiest Roles

Donald Sutherland has appeared in so many films in his 50-year career, which is quite a feat for any actor. But it’s especially impressive for the Canada-born actor, who — and I mean this in a perfectly nice way — has always exhibited something in his demeanor and personality that, well, puts one ill at ease. I can’t really put my finger on it, but surely I’m not the only one who has been a little creeped out by a Donald Sutherland performance. This week, Sutherland turned 79 (another impressive accomplishment!) and seems to show no signs of slowing down. In honor of his remarkable career, let’s take a look at five roles that are certainly Sutherland’s creepiest.

1

Don't Look Now (1973)

Nicolas Roeg’s psychological thriller, as a whole, is pretty creepy: Sutherland and Julie Christie play a couple who are grieving over the death of their child, and they’re told by a psychic that their child is trying to contact them from beyond the grave. Plus, there’s a pretty long, uncomfortable, graphic sex scene in case you’ve always wanted to know what Sutherland was packing.

2

Fellini's Casanova (1976)

Most of Sutherland’s creepiness in Fellini’s oddball film is confined to the hair and makeup. But just the thought of Sutherland as the debauched Italian participating in all of those orgies is a little discomforting.

JFK (1991)

Sure, Sutherland does Kevin Costner’s Jim Garrison a solid by revealing a top-level government conspiracy behind the assassination of John F. Kennedy, implicating members of the CIA, the FBI, the Mafia, and even Lyndon Baines Johnson. That he knew all of that, and that his name is Mr. X, makes one a little uncomfy, no?

4

Backdraft (1991)

Look, all of us are a little obsessed with fire, right? But most of us know when to draw a line. Unfortunately for the convicted arsonist Ronald Bartel, his love of fire was too intense.

The Hunger Games

Look, there’s no way around it: if you’re the fascist leader of a dystopian society that pits teenagers against each other in fights to the death for the amusement of society, you’re gonna have to be OK with the fact that folks may think you’re slightly creepy. Sorry about that, Coriolanus Snow. (Also, your crazy name doesn’t really help your case.)
