Today we celebrate Andy Warhol‘s birthday (he would have been 86 years old) as well as his enduring influence of a variety of artistic mediums. But, of course, it’s film that we really care about. Though most of his own productions — films like Flesh, Women in Revolt, and Trash — aren’t available to stream online, there are still Warhol-related biopics and documentaries, not to mention his screen tests, to check out.
'13 Most Beautiful... Songs For Andy Warhol's Screen Tests'
Between 1964 and 1966, Warhol shot a series of silent short film portraits of his Factory regulars — folks like Edie Sedgwick, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Nico, and Viva. In 2008, the Andy Warhol Museum commissioned indie-pop duo Dean and Britta to record music for the silent films, which resulted in an album of original songs and covers and a corresponding collection of the films. 'Beautiful Darling: The Life and Times of Candy Darling, Andy Warhol Superstar'
Here’s a lovely documentary about Candy Darling, a transgender actress who appeared in several of Warhol’s films (Women in Revolt, Chelsea Girls, and Flesh) as well as serving as a muse for Lou Reed, who immortalized her in the songs “Candy Says” and “Walk on the Wild Side.” Stream Beautiful Darling on Netflix.
'The Doors'
In a brief sequence in Oliver Stone’s trippy biopic of The Doors, front man Jim Morrison attends a party at the Factory where he kisses Edie, gets a BJ from Nico, and interacts with a spacey Andy Warhol, played with ultimate weirdness by the similarly spacey Crispin Glover. 'Basquiat'
In Julian Schnabel’s biopic about the celebrated artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, musician David Bowie dons a floppy white wig to play the art world superstar and Basquiat’s mentor. See where to stream Basquiat on GoWatchIt.
'Factory Girl'
Like Bowie and Glover before him, Australian actor Guy Pearce powdered his face and hair and perfected his ennui-soaked American accent for his portrayal of Warhol in this heavy-handed film chronicling the rise and fall of Factory superstar Edie Sedgwick. See where to stream Factory Girl on GoWatchIt.
'Men In Black III'
Perhaps the most surreal versions of Warhol on screen, Bill Hader plays the artist in this sci-fi comedy, which suggests that Warhol was actually a member of the MIB (which makes perfect sense, really). Stream Men in Black III on Netflix.
