‘The Theory Of Everything’ Trailer: Eddie Redmayne Plays Stephen Hawking As A Romantic Hero

Stephen Hawking might be one of the greatest scientific minds in human history, but a new movie is pitching him as a romantic hero. The first international trailer for The Theory of Everything shows Eddie Redmayne playing Hawking as an ambitious young man romancing Felicity Jones while struggling to overcome a potentially fatal disease. In other words: it’s Oscar bait.

Sure, Stephen Hawking scientifically proved that the universe started with a singularity. And yes, he’s done astonishing work that married quantum mechanics with the general theory of relativity. Yeah, he wrote A Brief History of Time, battled Lou Gehrig’s disease, and appeared as himself on Star Trek: The Next Generation, but none of those things are the most important thing about him. The coolest thing about Stephen Hawking is that he fell in love with a nice girl named Jane and they rode on a merry-go-round.

The Theory of Everything is poised to be an Oscar contender, but it could potentially do good business. At least, the trailer makes the film look like it’s The Fault In Our Stars for science nerds and that’s a market that I’m sure exists. The Theory of Everything is scheduled for release on November 7.

Of course, if you can’t wait to find out what happens to Stephen Hawking and his wife, Jane, you can google them or you can check out the 2004 biopic, Hawking. Ten years ago Benedict Cumberbatch nabbed a BAFTA nomination and garnered the attention of industry insiders when he played the young Hawking in that film.
