The 10 Most Unnatural Storms On Film

If you haven’t seen the trailer for the atmospherical epic Into The Storm, due out tomorrow, do yourself a solid and give it a play.

There are TORNADOS ON FIRE, PEOPLE. If that’s not enough to get you hyped for the most outrageous, blasphemous, intense weather-themed thriller since Sharknado 2: The Second One, here’s a round-up of the craziest, unbelievably unnatural storms on film if you aren’t able to make it out to the theaters this weekend.

1

'Sharknado' (2013)

The day sharks are swept up into the sky, whipped around, and then released from a twister to attack humans on the ground is the day we know it’s all over. Not to worry — that’s why it’s ranked as the most unnatural storm because it’ll never happen. (Knock on wood.) It if does, hopefully Tara Reid will be around so we have something to laugh at in our last moments. See where you can stream Sharknado on GoWatchIt

2

'Noah' (2014)

Although water levels are rising at alarming rates thanks to global warming, it’s doubtful we’ll have to worry about the fate of our existence resting on Russell Crowe’s shoulders. Stuck on a gigantic, disgusting, smelly ark while it downpours for forty days and forty nights? Let’s pray this never happens again. Oh, wait… God caused that one, right? 3

'Take Shelter' (2011)

The storm envisioned by Curtis (Michael Shannon) made it clear that there would be little to no survivors left on Earth if it actually hit. Spoiler alert: when it finally did, we understood why this guy was so terrified that he wet the bed and felt awful for ever doubting him in the first place. 'The Wizard of Oz' (1939)

You may be thinking, “It’s just a tornado, what’s so unnatural about it?” Though the storm animation and special effects in 1939 weren’t as up to snuff as we’re used to these days with cinematic gems like Sharknado, this particular storm sequence is so unnatural. There’s a lady pedaling on a bike in the middle of a tornado, for crying out loud! Not only did the twister slow down and speed up at intervals that go against all scientific logic, it’s also perfectly timed to music! See where you can stream The Wizard of Oz on GoWatchIt

5

'The Day After Tomorrow' (2004)

It rained, it flooded, there was a deadly blizzard, and then The Day After Tomorrow took cold to the next level and the storm froze everything in its path at temperatures of -100° F. If you thought the Polar Vortex was bad, just put on this movie and think about how good you had it this past winter. See where you can stream The Day After Tomorrow on GoWatchIt

6

'Twister' (1996)

More big ass tornadoes! After the tragedies in the midwest in recent years, the premise of this movie — gigantic tornadoes ripping up everything in their paths — sadly doesn’t seem so unnatural after all. The movie follows a storm-chasing couple (Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton) who must somehow come up with a weather alert system to save mankind, but the only way they can do so is by chasing a bunch of tornadoes around. The only good thing about this movie is that Philip Seymour Hoffman is in it. Watch Twister on Amazon Instant Video

7

'Dante's Peak' (1997)

Sure, this storm wasn’t caused by anything happening in the atmosphere, but below the surface something was certainly a-brewin.’ After Dante’s Peak blows, the sky is covered in volcanic ash, creating a fiery storm of its own. The most memorable part in this movie, however, has nothing to do with Dante’s Peak, but another volcano that Harry (Pierce Brosnan) and his late wife Marianne were running away from. Poor Marianne took a blazing volcanic rock right to the dome. See where you can stream Dante’s Peak on GoWatchIt

8

'The Perfect Storm' (2000)

Sure, Clooney forced his crew to go on the fishing trip from hell, but honestly, after watching several seasons of Deadliest Catch, this movie makes the ocean look like a kiddie pool. Although, this was a pretty awesome movie to go see in theaters when it first came out. See where you can stream The Perfect Storm on GoWatchIt

9

'The Impossible' (2012)

This is down towards the bottom of the list because, if you don’t already know, this actually happened — which is still terrifying to think about. The film is based on the true story of a family’s survival after a tsunami hit the coast of Thailand back in 2004. The wave was so powerful and unrelenting, you keep having to remind yourself that, sure, this is a movie, but this horror was very much real. See where you can stream The Impossible on GoWatchIt

'This Is The End' (2013)

After the apocalypse began and a giant sinkhole swallowed up everyone famous from Rihanna to Aziz Ansari, the sky started to rain fire upon L.A. and the Frat Pack. The most unnatural part? Famous people would never be swallowed up in a sinkhole or have to deal with fire in the air — they would have made it up to Backstreet Boy Heaven before any of that nonsense happened.
