Amazon Fall Pilot Season: Will You Want To Visit ‘Red Oaks’?

Not to be undone by Netflix and Hulu, Amazon has been producing their own pilots for the past few years and today they released their latest round of pilots online. The five titles (The Cosmopolitans, Red Oaks, Hysteria, Really and The Hand of God) are available to stream for free. Unlike a lot of other studios, Amazon will be taking viewer comments into consideration when it comes to deciding whether or not to pick these pilots up for full season orders. Check back here for all of Decider’s recaps.

Red Oaks is yet another coming-of-age story set in the 1980s. However, it’s actually charming and incredibly well-made. It boasts a big name producer, Steven Soderbergh, and a talented cast that includes ’80s icons and up-and-coming indie darlings. I chuckled a few times and would want to see what happens next. You can stream the pilot for free here.

This Is David

David Myers’s father wants him to be a CPA, but he’s more interested in French cinema than accounting. David also happens to be a fantastic tennis player, which secures him a summer job as an assistant tennis pro at the luxurious Red Oaks Country Club. If the actor playing David, Craig Roberts, looks familiar to you, it might be because you’re hardcore into European cinema, too. Roberts garnered international acclaim for his performance in the British indie film, Submarine.

David’s Parents

David’s parents, Sam and Judy, are played by Richard Kind and ’80s movie icon Jennifer Grey. When David’s father suffers a terrible heart attack, he reveals that he never should have married his wife and that she might be a lesbian. They both also might have a thing for Sam’s Asian doctor…

David’s Boss

This is Nash (Ennis Esmer). He’s Red Oaks’ tennis pro and an adulterous schemer. He hires David as his assistant because the young man naively accepts a terrible hourly split. You kind of want to hate him, but he’s incredibly charming and really does look out for David.

David’s Boss’s Boss

David gets on the bad side of Red Oaks head honcho, Doug Getty (Paul Reiser), when he lets the older man win a few matches on the court. Getty takes it as a sign that David doesn’t have a strong enough game to be a tennis pro. To keep his job, David has to beat Getty in six straight sets while hungover.

David’s Girlfriend

David might not have a clue what he’s doing with his life, but he does have a gorgeous girlfriend named Karen (Gage Golightly). She’s kind of an 1980s dream come to life: she’s got crimped blonde hair, heavily-shaded mermaid eyes and she’s thrilled to have sex on a golf course. She’s also the aerobics instructor at Red Oaks and has already mapped out their future. The thing is David might not want that future and Karen might not, either. The final moments of the pilot tease that Karen might have her eye on the lecherous Barry (Josh Meyers).

David’s Best Friend

This is David’s best friend, Wheeler (Oliver Cooper). He’s overweight, undersexed and smokes a lot of weed while on the clock as a Red Oaks valet. He also likes to ruminate on the teachings of Buddha and he is fixated on a beautiful lifeguard named Misty.

David’s Mystery Girl

Even though David has the love and affection of a girl who walks around in neon spandex, he is incredibly drawn to a sly brunette mystery girl (Alexandra Socha) at Red Oaks. So far all we know about her is that she is Getty’s daughter and that she hates tennis. She flirtatiously refuses to give David her first name, but IMDB says her name is Skye.
