The Best Baseball Movies On Streaming

Today is baseball legend Roger Maris’s birthday; the first major leaguer to break the record for over 60 homers in a season would have been 80 years old. Unfortunately, the biopic 61*, about Maris’s less-than-glamorous journey through the MLB limelight, is unavailable to stream, but we found ten baseball classics that are.

1

'Bull Durham' (1988)

Angels in the Outfield and The Sandlot are no longer available to stream, so Bull Durham will have to take the cake for being number one, though it’s nothing to sneeze at considering it’s known as one of the greatest sports movies of all time. Kevin Costner stars as Crash Davis, a minor league veteran pitcher sent down to single-A to coach a cocky up-and-comer, Ebby LaLoosh (Tim Robbins), on how to make it in the majors. [GoWatchIt]

'A League of Their Own' (1992)

Rachel Phelps (Margaret Whitton) has just inherited the Cleveland Indians, only she wants to uproot them to Miami. She thinks by recruiting the worst team in the history of the MLB, she’ll be allowed to break her contract with the city of Cleveland and be on her way to the sunny beaches of southern Florida. The only problem: they aren’t as bad as she had hoped. Starring Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Rene Russo, and Wesley Snipes. [GoWatchIt]

Right before Robert De Niro collaborated with Martin Scorsese on Mean Streets, he starred as Bruce Pearson in this heart-wrenching adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name. Bruce’s BFF, Henry (Michael Moriarty), is the star pitcher of the New York Mammoths, while Bruce is barely hanging on to his position as catcher. After learning Bruce has recently been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, Henry resigns with the Mammoths under one condition: Bruce pitches for him the whole way. [GoWatchIt]

'Moneyball' (2011)

If you haven’t seen our list of Sports Movies for People Who Hate Sports, you should definitely check it out. While Moneyball didn’t make the cut, this movie is perfect for learning about the inner workings of the diamond. Plus, it stars Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. Pitt plays real-life manager of the Oakland Athletics, Billy Beane, who adopted a sabermetric approach to the Athletics lineup — in other words, only play the guys who have the highest on-base percentage, it doesn’t matter how much of a slugger they are. Though the Athletics didn’t win the division championship the first year trying, they did win 20 games in a row — an MLB record.  [GoWatchIt]

'42' (2013)

Though it hasn’t been out long enough to be considered a classic, in due time, this film adaptation of Jackie Robinson’s harrowing journey through the major leagues will surely go down as one of the best baseball biopics. Robinson’s widow, Rachel, oversaw the making of the film and was proud of the end result, believing writer-director Brian Helgeland and Chadwick Boseman (who played Robinson) captured Jackie’s pain and triumph in breaking down race barriers in baseball. [GoWatchIt]

'The Natural' (1984)

The story of Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) a naturally talented pitcher who can’t seem to catch a break on his rise to the majors. The cinematography and acting make this poignant baseball tale even greater to watch. Also starring Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, Barbara Hershey, and Kim Basinger. [Watch on Amazon Instant Video]

Algeni Perez Soto plays struggling baseball pitcher, Miguel Santos (AKA “Sugar”), who tries to make it to the majors so he can help bring his family out of poverty in the Dominican Republic. Though a fictional account of class struggle within the MLB organization, Sugar feels all too real.  [GoWatchIt]

Nope, not the crappy remake with Billy Bob Thornton (sorry Richard Linklater, but that was not one of your best), but the original starring Walter Matthau and Tatum O’Neal. When the Little League organization of Southern California bans the worst players from participating, Morris Buttermaker (Matthau) is recruited to coach a new team of rag-tag players to compete. [GoWatchIt]
