What To Watch When You’re Obsessed With ‘Serial’

There is a crime drama that is gripping everyone on the internet right now and it isn’t a television show, documentary, or film. It is a podcast called Serial.

Sarah Koenig, a writer and producer on This American Life, launched Serial a few weeks ago in the hopes of presenting a new kind of podcast. See, while This American Life will cover one story or theme in a single hour-long episode, Serial is going to tell one giant story over an entire season of episodes. Koenig’s debut story? She’s investigating a true crime from over 15 years ago.

Baltimore teen Hae Min Lee was strangled to death on January 13, 1999. Her Pakistani ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was promptly charged and convicted with her murder. While many involved with the case have no doubt that Adnan killed Hae, there are some inconsistencies with the case that have haunted others for years. One of Adnan’s friend’s relatives reached out to Koenig to look into these troubling inconsistencies, and what was supposed to just be a single story for the reporter turned into an all-consuming obsession for an entire nation.

Even if you haven’t caught up with Serial, there’s no doubt that Koenig is on to something. There’s something so intriguing about crime stories and tales told from multiple points of view. And so, we’ve compiled this list of ten streaming titles that will keep you guessing — and hopefully tie you over — until a new episode of Serial comes out on Thursday.

And if you aren’t listening to Serial, you really ought to. It’s good. It’s very good. And it’s free.

‘The Affair’

Serial’s first episode set up the idea that it’s hard for us to rely on our own memories. Where were you on a March 21, 2013? What were you wearing? What did you eat? Who did you see? Can you remember all that?!? Showtime’s The Affair also deals with how unreliable our own memories are. The series tells the story of an extramarital affair from the point of view of both parties — who are coincidentally being interviewed by cops about a murder. Let’s just say, the two stories don’t add up… [Where To Stream The Affair]

‘Stories We Tell’

There are a lot of stories that deal with the implications of shifting narratives and false memories in murder investigations, but how does perspective affect our own lives? Actress, writer, and director Sarah Polley interviewed her own family, and revealed all of their darkest secrets, in this beautiful documentary. Her purpose? She wasn’t trying to solve a crime; she wanted to know who her real father was. [Where To Stream Stories We Tell]

3

'Zodiac'

David Fincher’s stylish thriller, Zodiac, might not be a documentary, but it’s inspired by real murder investigation and by the journalists whose lives were consumed by covering it. Zodiac actually packs a triple pop culture punch right now. It’s a good watch if you’re also still reeling from Gone Girl and if you’re wondering where Ryan Murphy is getting a lot of his inspiration for American Horror Story: Freak Show. [Where To Stream Zodiac]

4

‘The Thin Blue Line’

Serial might be a pioneer in the world of podcasting, but if you want to trace the history of documentaries blowing the lid off murder cases with the use of dramatic editing and source interviews, you’ve got to start with Errol Morris’ The Thin Blue Line. It’s the film credited with inventing crime scene reenactments and it’s streaming on Netflix. [Where To Stream The Thin Blue Line]

5

‘The Staircase’

Sundance

Many fans have likened Serial to the Sundance Channel’s epic documentary series, The Staircase. Like Serial, The Staircase follows a real-life murder trial, and like Sarah Koenig, its creators have long struggled to figure out whether or not the guy did it or not. [Where To Stream The Staircase]

6

‘Twin Peaks’

Who killed Hae Min Lee? How about “Who Killed Laura Palmer?” It’s the question that set off David Lynch’s landmark crime series, Twin Peaks. We might have closure on that infamous case, but we’ve been obsessing over that show for over two decades now. [Where To Stream Twin Peaks]

7

‘Broadchurch’

Forget all about Gracepoint and go straight to that show’s British source material. Broadchurch follows two mismatched detectives as they investigate the death of a boy in a small town. What they discover is that everyone in the town has a secret, and everyone has a motive. [Where To Stream Broadchurch]

‘The Wire’

Has listening to Serial made you want to delve deeper into the sordid world of Baltimore crime? Well, then, luckily for you one of the Golden Age of television’s most sprawling and brilliant series is all about Baltimore’s seedier side.  [Where To Stream The Wire]

9

‘Manhunter’

In the latest episode of Serial, Sarah Koenig muses that her biggest problem with the case is that she can’t figure out if Adnan is innocent, or if he’s a brilliant and conniving sociopath. There’s no doubt that we’ve also been charmed by Adnan’s interviews, but he’s nothing compared to the granddaddy of all manipulative sociopaths: Hannibal Lector. Revisit Lector’s first onscreen appearance in Michael Mann’s moody masterpiece, Manhunter, tonight. [Where To Stream Manhunter]

10

‘True Detective’

Serial might be your pop culture obsession right now, but we’re willing to bet that you couldn’t stop thinking about True Detective this past spring. Even though the ending left us all feeling lukewarm, that doesn’t mean that the show isn’t worth a rewatch on HBO Go. Besides, it might just temper our expectations about the inevitable — and possibly disappointing — ending of Serial. [Where To Stream True Detective]
