I’m not a huuuuuge Star Wars fan, but I admit that I was pretty excited when I watched the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens last Friday amidst my turkey-and-wine hangover. I have no real clue what is happening in it, but it was pretty cool nonetheless. But I had no idea how CONTROVERSIAL the trailer was. No, I’m not talking about the racist response to John Boyega‘s appearance as a stormtrooper in the trailer (although, while we’re on the subject, what is wrong with people?) — rather, it’s the shocking new lightsaber that a shadowy figure in a wooded, distant land brandishes in the teaser that’s the cause of an uproar.

Yes, a lightsaber controversy. Can you imagine the intergalactic social justice warriors going nuts over this, furiously typing think-pieces (that’s my nice way of saying “multiple-paragraph Reddit comments”) about this heated issue? I cannot — that is, I didn’t think much about it until Stephen Colbert took on Sabergate head on in a segment on The Colbert Report.

I still don’t really get it, quite honestly, which is fine, because that’s how I like my sci-fi epics: fantastical and confusing. Lightsaber controversy or not, I’ll still be seeing the movie next Christmas.
