Ouch! See Who Got Snubbed From The Oscar Race

Like every awards season, there were a few snubs (and some surprises!) this morning after the Academy announced the 2015 nominations for the 87th annual Academy Awards. Though plenty of films this year have seen Oscar-worthy performances and direction, some of your favorites may not have made the cut. See who got snubbed and who’s making a surprise appearance on the ballot this year in our complete list of Where to Stream the 2015 Oscar Nominations.

BEST PICTURE

Unbroken and Wild: After some grumbling that director Angelina Jolie failed to include the most harrowing part of Louis Zamperini’s (played by Jack O’Connell) story in her film, the Academy may have taken this into consideration when leaving Unbroken out of the race. Wild, on on the other hand, is a bit more surprising given that just last year, director Jean-Marc Vallée’s Dallas Buyers Club was nominated for a slew of awards, including Best Picture.

BEST DIRECTOR

Ava DuVernay, Selma: We’re still aghast from the Academy’s snub of DuVernay, who made such an important film that’s so very relevant in the here and now.

BEST ACTOR

David Oyelowo, Selma: In a shocking announcement, Oyelowo and his portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. were snubbed in favor of Bradley Cooper’s role of Chris Kyle, the deadliest sniper in American history. Though Oyelowo’s performance has been universally praised by critics, Cooper’s campaigning pulled through at the last minute.

BEST ACTRESS

Jennifer Aniston, Cake: No one wanted the Oscar nomination more than Jennifer Aniston, who campaigned the hardest out of all the contenders this awards season. Though she nabbed the Golden Globe nod, she was pushed out by Oscar favorite Marion Cotillard for her role in the Dardenne Brothers’ Two Days, One Night.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Jessica Chastain, A Most Violent YearWe knew it would be a long shot for the J.C. Chandor drama to be nominated after the Academy fell out of love with the filmmaker’s previous endeavor, All Is Lost. But Chastain’s performance was top notch and creating a lot of buzz. The actress wasn’t allowed to promote the film, however, as it would conflict with her contract for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. Could this lack of campaigning be to blame?

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Gillian Flynn, Gone GirlWhen Gone Girl was released, all audiences could talk about was the incredible adaptation of Flynn’s novel. Before this morning, the novelist and now screenwriter, was thought to be a shoo-in for a nomination. [Where to stream Gone Girl]

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

The LEGO Movie: HOW?! How did this get snubbed?! We thought for sure this was a given since everyone and their brother is featured as a character in this animated blockbuster. No one has even heard of Song of the Sea, the film that bumped it. [Where to stream The LEGO Movie]

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

Bradford Young, Selma and A Most Violent Year:  Unfortunately, Young was doubly snubbed this year, but Hollywood should wake up and see that our cinematographer of a generation arrived on the scene some time ago. Before A Most Violent Year and Selma, he was cinematographer for Ava DuVernay’s family drama Middle of Nowhere and Dee Rees’ harrowing Pariah. The man is a reincarnation of Nestor Almendros (Sophie’s Choice, Days of Heaven), but dare I say better. Keep this guy on your radar.
