Diane Lane turns 50 years young today. 50!

It’s hard to think of many other actors, male or female, of Lane’s generation who have worked as steadily over the course of the last 35+ years. Since starring alongside Sir Laurence Olivier (!) in 1979’s A Little Romance, she’s racked up 57 credits, most of which have been either starring or key supporting roles. That’s more than her Outsiders co-horts Tom Cruise (40 roles), Matt Dillon (54) or Emilio Estevez (46), but slightly south of Rob Lowe’s 87 credits (who I think we can safely agree has made some really terrible choices over the years). This is a testament to her skill as an actor, of course, but also to her relatability; she’s managed to avoid the pitfalls that beset countless other It Girls over the years and instead developed into a role model for women of all ages.

All of which is a very long winded way of suggesting that you take some time to watch 1982’s Ladies And Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains, which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Instant Video. I was reminded of the movie—which I admittedly haven’t seen in many, many moons—today when the female rock trio Ex Hex released their new music video for “Don’t Wanna Lose,” an unabashed tribute to the film about the exploits of an all-female punk trio called The Stains (led by a supremely sassy 17-year-old Lane). Also starring Laura Dern and Ray Winstone, Stains takes the infamous 1980 Sex Pistols mockumentary The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle and runs with it, along the way serving as inspiration for both 1985’s The Legend Of Billie Jean and Floria Sigismondi’s 2010 biopic The Runaways.

If you’re not quite sold on Ladies And Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains yet, watch this portion of the movie of the band singing a song called “Join The Professionals.” If you like it, there’s more of that to follow. If you don’t, might we suggest streaming A Walk On The Moon? (That movie rules, too, albeit in a very different way.)
