Watch The Trailer For Tina Fey’s New Netflix Show, ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’

Tina Fey is returning to television! Well, sort of.

The comedy megastar is producing a new sitcom, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, for Netflix. The show was originally developed for NBC, but after the network passed on the project, Netflix picked it up.

The series stars the delightful Ellie Kemper (The Office, Bridesmaids) as the eponymous Kimmy Schmidt, a young woman who spent 15 years trapped in an underground apocalypse cult bunker with three other women. While it seems that the other captives want to return to their old way of life, Kimmy decides to take the Big Apple by storm. She gleefully rents a terrible basement apartment room, snags a soul-crushing job assisting a rich woman (played by 30 Rock alum Jane Krakowski), and declares that she will be “unbreakable.”

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is an interesting choice for Netflix. The first trailer suggests that it’s got a lot of the gloss that mainstream network shows have, but also a ton of quirk. The series could also signal a new turn in Fey’s career. Up until now, she’s appeared onscreen in most of her projects, but she won’t act in this new series. If the series does well at Netflix, Fey could become a new comedy impresario.
