In case you haven’t heard the news, Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson of the sex epic Fifty Shades of Grey kind of hate each other. Despite the sexy posters and promos, the duo has confirmed time and again that they truly have no chemistry and can barely stand being in the same room as one another. This reminded us of other mismatched couples that have fumbled with buttons and zippers and libidos on the big screen over the years. From rom-coms to dramas and indie satires in between, here are the most outlandish on-screen (and in some cases, off-screen) couples that made us spit out our colloquial popcorn and scratch our heads.

Sandler has always thought highly of himself when it comes to the ladies in addition to the two hotties above. Drew Barrymore, Julie Bowen, Leslie Mann, Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale, Bridgette Wilson, Drew Barrymore — you get the point. However, to have Jennifer Aniston and Brooklyn Decker both play love interests is so unbelievable, we couldn’t just go with it, Adam. We’re smarter than that. This is an example of what should be universally recognized as “The Director’s Sly Advantage to Make Himself Look Like a Stud.” Listen, Jon Favreau, everyone loves you. You make fun, awesome movies that anyone can get behind. Chef is one of your best, but man oh man, ScarJo should have never played your love interest. Not only was it unbelievable, it was distracting. There are plenty of middle-aged actresses out there who would have loved to chow down on some delicious eats and play a role that suited your character and film much better than her. Congratulations, David O. Russell, you single-handedly created the most unbelievable on-screen couple. It wasn’t just the fact they had zero chemistry, it was also that she looked and acted more like his bratty, loud, obnoxious teenage daughter than his trophy wife. Lawrence’s character should have ditched Bale, made a pass at Bradley Cooper and his perm, had a Silver Linings reunion, and everyone would have gone home happy.
