HuffPost Live To Develop Scripted Shows And Documentaries

Navigating the wild world of The Huffington Post can be a daunting task — the site is made up of many verticals and can be, at times, an overwhelming place to find news or compelling op-eds. It wouldn’t be completely surprising that you weren’t aware of their in-house TV station, HuffPost Live, which offers live talk shows pretty much every day (and, full disclosure, both myself and my colleague Meghan O’Keefe have appeared on the HuffPost Live show Spoiler Alert). But the folks at The Huffington Post are hoping to change that.

This morning, the site’s editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington and its CEO Jimmy Maymann announced in a memo some major moves the company will make with its video department, which will include new pursuits in original content: “short and long-form, branded entertainment, live programming, scripted, documentaries, TV, features — and program and distribute that content globally at scale.”

While the site will continue its HuffPost Live programming, which includes about forty hours of content weekly, the foundation of HuffPost Studios will begin working on a variety of new content — starting with The HuffPost Show, which will be a “weekly satirical political program” hosted by HuffPost Live president and co-founder Roy Sekoff and regular HuffPost Live host Marc Lamont Hill. That program will premiere at the end of the month. Would this mean HuffPost Live would be the first online venture that will enter the space currently occupied by the likes of Bill Maher, John Oliver, and Larry Wilmore? Could this be an attempt to fill the soon-to-be-empty spot left open by Jon Steward?

Why is this a big deal? In an industry that is pushing for more original video content, the Huffington Post may very well lead the way as an online news organization that brings together elements of print and TV journalism. Whether its first venture can compete with its satirical cable news predecessors is still up in the air — but it’s a bold move nonetheless.
