In a damning Daily Mail article, Piers Morgan lays into movie star and his former idol Tom Cruise about ditching the Church of Scientology before Hollywood cuts him out. We’ve previously analyzed whether or not the damaging information in Alex Gibney‘s controversial documentary Going Clear will destroy Cruise’s career, but the former CNN host seems to think the end of the actor’s career is inevitable unless he takes a proactive approach in leaving the church behind.
Gibney’s film, based on Lawrence Wright’s award-winning book of the same name, claims that church executives and Cruise allegedly worked together to tap his then-wife Nicole Kidman‘s phone lines to prove she was a Suppressive Person (or “SP”) in the eyes of church. Scientology head (and close friend to Cruise) David Miscavige also allegedly had auditors work to turn the couple’s adopted children against Kidman. In addition to these accusations, Gibney also highlighted the secrecy behind one of Cruise’s post-Kidman girlfriends, who was hand-picked for him by the church only to be then shunned to “the Hole,” also known as the church’s unofficial prison, when she accidentally embarrassed Cruise in front of Miscavige at dinner.
Morgan believes that between these claims and Cruise’s bizarre behavior over the years, Hollywood will have no choice but to cut off the actor. “Judging by the horrified reaction from the public on social media (I was on Twitter when Going Clear aired on Sunday night and the fury against Cruise was instant and intense), it won’t work,” Morgan writes. “Either he cuts off the Church of Scientology with the same ruthless selfishness he seems to have deployed in the first selecting and disposing of the woman in his life. Or, in the wake of this factual horror movie, I suspect Hollywood will finally cut HIM off.”
Ouch. Though Morgan seems somewhat far removed from Cruise, he offers another point of affirmation that this could be the end of the movie star’s esteemed international career. Yet, as we argued on Monday morning, the amount of collateral damage the church could potentially use against Cruise will likely keep the actor close to Miscavige’s proverbial vest.
