And you thought Salem couldn’t get any more bonkers…

Sure, season one gave us a girl in a cage mask, a woman breastfeeding a toad (by way of a nipple on her thigh), and a guy getting pressed to death, but nothing could have prepared us for the moment in last night’s season two premiere when Mercy Lewis (Elise Eberle) lures a man into a graveyard, cuts off his “manhood,” and replaces it with a crow.

That’s right. Salem gave a dude a crow penis.

The moment caused ripples at the Salem two premiere we attended last month and we had to ask the show’s writers…”What’s the deal with the crow penis?”

Apparently, it’s from history! Salem co-creator and Cosmos producer Brannon Braga defends the scene by saying the practice was “taken from the transcripts of the witch trials… There were women accused of turning men’s genitals into birds and hiding their dicks in nests.” See? Men really had their genitals replaced by birds! Well, sort of.

The show’s other creator, Adam Simon elaborated. “It all comes from all of the research done into various witchcraft beliefs of that century. So, we’ve broadened it a little bit beyond there.”

Salem returns with an all-new episode next Sunday. Stream the first season of Salem here.
