The internet is full of brilliant Game of Thrones fans who pride themselves on being able to find every tiny reference to Westeros on the show, but it seems that one little tiny Easter egg escaped everyone’s notice. That’s probably because it’s not a nod to George R.R. Martin’s intensely detailed fantasy world, but rather, a Monty Python joke.

As our friends over at HitFix have reported, the Game of Thrones writers have revealed that the lone rider who mocks Daenerys by whipping out his wang in last season’s “Breaker of Chains” episode was quoting John Cleese. The rider was speaking in the Low Valyrian tongue, specifically reciting Cleese’s hilariously absurd taunts from Monty Python and the Holy Grail:

‘I fart in your general direction! Your mother a a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries. You don’t frighten us, English pig-dogs! Go boils your bottoms, son of a silly person! I wave my private parts at your aunties!”

Remember?

Game of Thrones fanatics could be forgiven for this oversight. After all, Dothraki is the only fictional language from the series that has been given a proper language guide. With any luck, though, this won’t be the last time that Monty Python references invade Westeros. Who’s up for a rendezvous between Dany and the Knights Who Say Ni?
