HBO Now officially launched yesterday, finally letting those of us (with Apple TV, that is) break free from the binds of borrowing our parents’ passwords so that we can subscribe to the premium cable network on our own — and just in time for this Sunday’s Game of Thrones premiere! But with more networks offering their own streaming platforms, consumers are raising questions as to how reliable the services will be — remember how HBO Go crashed during the True Detective finale? — as to how much buffering will take place while you’re streaming your favorite show. We’ll find out how HBO Now handles the Game of Thrones fans taking to the Internet en masse to watch the premiere this weekend, but one thing is for certain: if your connection is slow, it’s most likely not HBO’s problem.

he cable network is firmly drawing a line between its programming and its online services. As Re/code points out, HBO’s help center directs the network’s subscribers to their own broadband provider if they notice issues with playback. And HBO is also distancing itself from questions about individual subscriptions, which is handled by iTunes. As Adam Epstein writes on Quartz, “It’s probably not laziness on HBO’s part when it directs customers to other companies to solve service or billing problems. HBO specifically developed HBO Now so that it wouldn’t have to deal with those issues, just as it isn’t responsible for them when someone buys HBO through a cable provider.”
