Last week’s episode of Outlander ended on a rather tense note: Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) had only just settled in at Lallybroch, when Claire woke up to find her beloved hot Scot being held at gunpoint. What happened next?

Well, for starters, Jamie wasn’t shot in the face. That’s good. You know, because you would never want a face like that destroyed by a bullet.

As it turns out, the gang of thieves who have stalked into Lallybroch aren’t ordinary rogues. They’re “the Watch.” For a fee and for a healthy dose of Fraser hospitality, they provide muscle against the Redcoats. So, they are stealing Lallybroch blind, but Jenny and Ian see them as the lesser of two evils.

Jamie isn’t convinced.

Jamie is also in a delicate position because if the Watch knows about the price on his head, they will surely turn him in. So, he’s masquerading as Jenny’s cousin. It’s a tough act to maintain because it’s clear to the Watch’s leader that Jamie is a warrior and that Jamie is hiding something.

Jamie’s pride is also an issue. Like, when he chastises one of the Watch’s men for helping himself to Ian’s tobacco, the dude retaliates by resting his pipe on a wagon of hay. Yeah, the guy responds by burning most of the Fraser’s hay.

How does Jamie react to the Watch burning most of his family’s hay? Sensibly, of course.

No, he totally starts a fight with the rough and tumble men. The Watch’s leader comes and breaks it up, but the scene only draws more attention to Jamie. The Watch’s leader man might not know exactly who our hero is, but he’s clocked him as a warrior. This means Jamie is either a threat or a potential ally.

Speaking of the Watch’s allies… A couple of extra warm bodies meet up with the Watch at Lallybroch. One is a shifty Irishman with a plan to ambush the Redcoats. When Jamie sees him, he has to do a double take — and you should do one, too — because that shifty Irishman is Horrocks, the same shifty Irishman who told Jamie that Black Jack framed him for his own crimes back in episode 9.

The long and short of it is that Horrocks knows that Jamie isn’t Jenny’s cousin and he knows all about the price on his head. This spells trouble for our favorite pretty-faced Scotsman.

Meanwhile, his sister is also in trouble. Her water breaks.

Did you guys know that giving birth used to be the number one cause of death for women? At least, I think that’s the statistic. It was either that or scurvy. In any case, having a baby used to be a very dangerous prospect. Jenny’s baby is breach, which means that it’s coming out foot-first. It also means that she really, really needs a midwife. Unfortunately, the midwife is out of town, so our super-nurse Claire is the next best thing. The women spend the rest of the episode bonding over what it feels like to have a baby. It’s nice.

However, it also leads Claire to confront her infertility. She and Frank were never able to have a child and for all their boning, she still hasn’t gotten pregnant by Jamie’s baby. So, she tearfully admits to Jamie that she might never have a kid.

Jamie reacts the way any dream man in a fictional romance would: he comforts Claire and says that it’s totally okay. After all, he loves her and doesn’t want her to die in childbirth. You guys, Jamie Fraser is perfect.

Of course, Jamie is also on the lam and Horrocks wants to blackmail him. Jamie is cool with giving the shifty Irishman some cash to make him shut up, but Horrocks keeps asking for more. It gets to a dangerous point where the men seem on the verge of shooting each other. That is, until Horrocks gets stabbed in the back by Ian.

Jamie and his friend/brother-in-law Ian bury Horrocks’ body and talk about how they’ll go to Hell together. It’s totally normal bro stuff. The one problem is that the Watch is now down a man, so Jamie gets coerced into joining their raid. Ian decides to go, too.

All this stress leads to some hot and heavy kissing. (BUT NO BONING.)

Oh, and Jenny finally has her baby.

Elsewhere, Jamie, Ian, and the Watch have taken the position that Horrocks suggested. Everyone is marveling at the dead man’s strategic insight. They all talk about how it’s such a great place for an ambush, and then Jamie realizes that it’s also a really good place to get ambushed…

And lo and behold, the Redcoats attack the Scots! Horrocks was such a slimy bastard that he actually set up the Watch up to get ambushed by the British. All hell breaks loose.

Back at Lallybroch, we learn that both Jenny and her baby — a little girl named Maggie — are fine. The experience has bonded Claire and Jenny, and Jenny gives Claire her mother’s fancy bracelets. She says, “the Lady of Lallybroch should have them.” The two women also bond over their worry over Jamie. Jenny reassures Claire that Jamie will come back, and the ladies light up when they see two figures stumbling down the path. This happiness turns to worry when they realize that it’s not Ian and Jamie, but Ian and the head of the Night’s Watch.

Ian has been injured and Jamie has been taken by the Redcoats.
