Meet Queue: Oscar Isaac Is More Than The New X-Wing Pilot In ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

We’ve been telling you for a while that you should get hip to Oscar Isaac. The actor is poised to take the world by storm this December as Resistance pilot Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and his latest film, Ex Machina, is this spring’s sleeper hit.

We thought that with all the Star Wars hype and Ex Machina love, that you might be itching for more Oscar Isaac. So, we’ve pulled together five must-see Oscar Isaac titles on streaming. It’s kind of like a “meet cute” in a romantic comedy, but because it’s all streaming, we’re calling it your “meet queue.” (Get it? It’s a pun.)

Agora (2009)

Oscar Isaac has delivered scene-stealing performances in a ton of flicks over the years, but we’re going to suggest that you check him out in Alejandro Amenabar’s criminally under-seen Agora. The gorgeous film tells the story of famous philosopher and mathematician Hypatia (played by Rachel Wiesz) and how life was in the last days of Alexandria. Isaac plays Orestes, a cocky young nobleman who falls for his bewitching teacher, only to be rebuffed. [Watch Agora]

Drive (2011)

Before he made a star-making turn in the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, Oscar Isaac was best known as “Carey Mulligan’s deadbeat husband in Drive.” Though he only has about 13 minutes of screen time — if that — he made an indelible impression on audiences everywhere. Isaac took what could have been a thankless sleaze-bag role and turned it into a nuanced portrait of a desperate man who’s been beaten down by life. [Where to Stream Drive]

Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)

Even if the Oscars overlooked Inside Llewyn Davis, industry insiders saw the film as a major turning point in Isaac’s career. Not only did the almost unknown actor carry an entire Coen Brothers film with a delicate balance of wit and sorrow, but he also showed off some insane musical chops. Oscar Isaac was actually a jobbing musician before he was an actor, so it’s a little ironic that he used those skills to jump start his film career into overdrive. The Two Faces of January (2014)

Let’s be honest: part of Oscar Isaac’s allure is that he is a very handsome man. I would argue, though, that he’s never been more attractive than as Rydal Keener in the glossy film adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Two Faces of January. The Guatamalan-born actor is lit like a Greek god and styled like a ’60s heartthrob. He flirts his butt off, chases after Kirsten Dunst, and recounts tragic Greek myths to scores of swooning women. Am I the only woman who swoons over handsome men retelling the legend of Theseus? Oh, it’s just me? Okay, well, he still looks good. [Watch The Two Faces of January]

A Most Violent Year (2014)

Oscar Isaac cemented his place as a critics’ darling this winter with his stellar turn in A Most Violent Year. The National Board of Review gave both the film and Isaac serious love, and (even though I personally think it should have been released this year to feed off of the actor’s Star Wars momentum) it’s likely to build steam as a cult classic among cinephiles. Oh, and it’s amazing to see Isaac throw down opposite his Juilliard classmate Jessica Chastain. [Where to Stream A Most Violent Year]
