Every Seinfeld fan remembers how George’s fiancée Susan met an ignoble end licking wedding invitation envelopes, but it’s never been revealed why the show decided to kill her off in the first place — until now.

Howard Stern had Jason Alexander in the hot seat recently, and the radio host took the opportunity to ask the actor about all the rumors surrounding Susan’s death and actress Heidi Swedberg’s exit. Mainly, Stern wanted to know if Swedberg was fired because the cast of Seinfeld hated her. Alexander explained what really went on.

“So, the preamble to this is the actress is this wonderful girl – Miss Swedberg — and I love her!” Alexander maintained. But…there was a but: “I couldn’t figure out how to play off of her. Her instincts for doing a scene — where the comedy was — and mine were always misfiring. And she would do something, and I would go, ‘Okay, I see what she’s going to do — I’m going to adjust to her.’ And I’d adjust, and then it would change.”

Alexander went on to explain that he was shocked when Larry David revealed that George would be marrying Susan. He sarcastically quipped, “Oh, great. Who’s playing George?”

The problem was that since Alexander was the only actor who was working with Swedberg, no one else realized how incompatible her acting style was with the voice of the show.

“Finally,” Alexander went on, “they do an episode where Elaine and Jerry have a lot of material with her. And they do the week and then we get we get to the restaurant afterward, and they go, ‘You know what? It’s fucking impossible. It’s impossible!” Julia Louis-Dreyfus reportedly joked, “Don’t you want to just kill her?” and that inspired Larry David to kill off Swedberg.

Did the cast of Seinfeld really hate Heidi Swedberg? No, but they certainly hated working with her.

Seinfeld will be available to stream on Hulu on June 24.
