By now, you might have heard of a movement called “Free The Nipple.” It’s a crusade to legitimize a woman’s right to be topless in public without being arrested, and it’s been championed by stars like Miley Cyrus and Lena Dunham. What you may not know is that filmmaker, actor, and activist Lina Esco reportedly started the movement only after her independent feature, Free The Nipple, failed to find distribution. Well, after three years and a torrent of social media attention, you can now stream Free The Nipple on Netflix.
The film has only a 2.4 star rating on Netflix and has been panned by leading critics, but its worth might not be found in measuring its quality as a work of art. The New York Times review of Free The Nipple sums it up best by saying that “the movie’s goal is straightforward advocacy — something it has accomplished simple by getting you to read this review.”

While there is toplessness in Free the Nipple, it’s either inexplicably pixelated or presented in a clearly non-sexual manner. The resounding message of both the film and the movement is that women’s bodies don’t exist solely to be sexualized. So, if you’re looking for some kind of dirty, bawdy parade of breasts, then this isn’t the film for you. If, however, you want to watch an independent film with a huge social message (and one of rising star Lola Kirke‘s earliest roles), then Free The Nipple is worth a gander.
