Meet Queue: Swoon For ‘Poldark’ Star Aidan Turner

There are a lot of reasons to tune into PBS’s latest Masterpiece offering Poldark, but the main attraction seems to be its leading man. Aidan Turner has been stealing hearts on TV and film for years, but Poldark is being considered his “Mr. Darcy moment.” It’s the role that’s catapulted him from “that hot guy from that hip show” to an international sensation. That said, he’s more than the BBC’s latest romantic hero; he’s also played a vampire, a dwarf, a werewolf, and a pre-Raphaelite.

If you’re itching for more Aidan Turner, then we’ve compiled five titles on streaming just for you. It’s kind of like a “meet cute” in a romantic comedy, but because it’s all streaming, we’re calling it your “meet queue.”

Desperate Romantics (2009)

One of Aidan Turner’s first jobs for the BBC was playing one of the most notoriously “romantic” men who ever lived: Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The painter and poet was one of the spearheads of the Pre-Raphaelite movement and had a tortured relationship with his lover and muse, Lizzie Siddel. Turner’s darkly handsome good looks were put to good effect in this underwatched BBC miniseries about the movement and the drama driving it. [Where to Stream Desperate Romantics]

Being Human (2009-2011)

In 2009, Aidan Turner got his first big break playing a a vampire trying to give up human blood. Dreamy, right? Of course, Being Human was no True Blood or Twilight. It was less about a sweeping romance and more about three unlikely flatmates bonding together. Turner’s character, John Mitchell, decides to board with a werewolf in a flat in Bristol. What they don’t realize is that the ghost of its former occupant also is their roomie. Its huge success in the UK led to an American version on SyFy. [Watch Being Human on Netflix or Hulu]

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

Whenever someone asks me who Aidan Turner is, I simply answer, “Oh, you know, he was Kili, the hot dwarf in The Hobbit trilogy.” This usually leads to people saying, “There was a hot dwarf?” And then I show them this photo. Look at him. He’s a hot dwarf. How hot? So hot that Peter Jackson invented a subplot where he romances Evangeline Lilly’s elf character. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2014)

It wasn’t enough for Turner to play a vampire and a dwarf; he also had to try out being a werewolf. Turner appears as a former Shadowhunter-turned-werewolf-turned-antiques dealer in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. He also gets to sport some silver fox locks and crush on Cersei Lannister, aka Lena Headey.  [Where to Stream The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones]

Poldark (2015)

Of course, all of these other titles were just a warm up for Turner’s biggest star turn to date in Poldark. Turner stars as Ross Poldark, a handsome, honorable, and reckless member of the gentry who returns home from war to discover his whole world’s been turned upside down. He recoups by working to help the community — and by getting embroiled in a scandalous love triangle. This all leads to drama, romance, and some tasteful skinnydipping. [Watch Poldark on PBS]
