Period pieces are all the rage on TV these days. Though we lost Mad Men this year, we’ve still got shows like The Americans, Masters of Sex, and Deutschland 83 to hold us over, all blending throwback aesthetics with moody drama. Netflix hasn’t yet tried out a series set in history, but it’s upcoming crime thriller Narcos looks like an absolute blast from the past.
Following the rise of the Medellín drug cartel, Narcos depicts the import of cocaine from Colombia into the United States during the early ’80s. At the center is one of the most notorious drug lord and trafficker in international history: Pablo Escobar. Shot entirely on location in Miami and Colombia, Narcos looks like nothing else Netflix has produced so far. It’s a serialized look at recent historical events told with heightened cinematic style and deeply rooted in realism.
