Amazon’s ‘Transparent’ Is The Most-Nominated Comedy At This Year’s Emmys

This morning marks a big win for Amazon, fresh off the company’s 20th anniversary yesterday. The critically acclaimed original series Transparent, which won two Golden Globes back in January (one for Best Comedy Series and one for Jeffrey Tambor‘s performance as Maura Pfefferman), earned 11 Emmy nominations this morning, making it the most-nominated comedy series this year.

Picking up nods for Outstanding Comedy Series (a first for Amazon Instant Video), Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Jeffrey Tambor), Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Gaby Hoffmann, who was also nominated this year for her guest role on Girls), and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series (Bradley Whitford, who played Maura’s cross-dressing pal, Marcy), Transparent proves its not just apart of the zeitgeist — it’s also helping to shift an outdated understanding of transgender issues, working alongside Caitlyn Jenner and Orange Is the New Black‘s Laverne Cox to bring awareness to a community that has long been mocked and marginalized by the entertainment industry.

Creator Jill Soloway, who based the show on her own parent coming out as trans, also received two nominations for direction and writing — making her one of two women nominated for directing a comedy or drama series.
