Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp wouldn’t have been possible without Netflix. In an interview with Rolling Stone, director/co-writer David Wain and co-writer Michael Showalter explain that while they intended for the prequel to originally be a movie, it soon became clear that a series for the streaming service would give them more freedom to do what they wanted. “Their creative model really lent itself to what we were thinking, which was to have way more material than we could fit in just one movie,” Showalter told the magazine. “This was more like a miniseries or serialized story, and not an open-ended network TV show that just goes on forever.“ Although the series has yet to debut, the duo also hinted that there could be even more Wet Hot American Summer to come. “I think this world is somehow just endlessly interesting to me,” Wain said. “Summer camp was a true defining experience in my own personal life, and so I’m not surprised that their tends to be more places to go there.”
