It’s been reported that Deadliest Catch star Tony Lara has passed away at the the age of fifty. While there have been conflicting accounts about the cause of death — including one report that he was involved in the world’s largest motorcycle rally — it seems that Lara died at home in his sleep. However, there’s still no official word on the cause of death.

Lara joined the crew of the Cornelia Marie in 2011 after the death of Captain Phil Harris. Fans will remember that Harris tragically collapsed on board the Cornelia Marie after complaining of feeling ill. He replaced Derrick Ray as the ship’s skipper and later that year became captain. Lara’s involvement with the Cornelia Marie was featured on the seventh season of Deadliest Catch.

This is only the latest tragedy to strike the reality show. A few weeks ago, Joe McMahon, a former associate producer for the show, was fatally shot outside his Pasadena home.

Deadliest Catch has aired on Discovery Channel for over ten years. The popular show follows the harrowing adventures of the real people who earn their living fishing off the coast of Alaska. [Watch Deadliest Catch on Hulu]
