Chances are you probably loved the first season of True Detective. You might have even gotten through its uneven second season and thought it was okay. However, one person who is decidedly not a fan of Nic Pizzolatto’s ponderous take on American noir is Quentin Tarantino.

The auteur sat down with Vulture for a candid discussion about film, TV, and his upcoming film, The Hateful Eight. At some point, in the conversation, QT was asked if he’d seen True Detective. His response was delightfully dismissive:

I tried to watch the first episode of season one, and I didn’t get into it at all. I thought it was really boring. And season two looks awful. Just the trailer — all these handsome actors trying to not be handsome and walking around looking like the weight of the world is on their shoulders. It’s so serious, and they’re so tortured, trying to look miserable with their mustaches and grungy clothes.

So, True Detective isn’t Tarantino’s bag. Do you know what HBO show he does like? Nope, not Game of Thrones or The Wire. He’s a fan of Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom. “That was the only show that I literally watched three times,” he said.

When interviewer Lane Brown pointed out that The Newsroom received poor reviews, Tarantino fired back: “Who the fuck reads TV reviews? Jesus fucking Christ. TV critics review the pilot. Pilots of shows suck.”

The entire interview makes for a great read and has only made us more amped up to see The Hateful Eight when it debuts later this year (and to revisit True Detective).
