Star Trek, Shakespeare & Sex Scenes: The Essential Patrick Stewart

Where to Stream:

Blunt Talk

Powered by Reelgood

For over 75 years, Patrick Stewart has thrilling audiences on stage, on film, and across the universe. The British actor made a name for himself as a spectacular Shakespearean actor, but over the years, he’s become better known for his contributions to some of science fiction’s biggest hits. Now, Stewart is embarking on a bold new chapter of his career. Blunt Talk calls upon the actor to stretch himself as a performer (and misbehave a little).

To honor the man’s amazing career, we’ve put together the ten shows and films that all Patrick Stewart fans absolutely must see. This is the essential Patrick Stewart on streaming.

1

'Blunt Talk'

Starz

Patrick Stewart is gleefully letting his freak flag fly in the new Starz series Blunt Talk. As beleaguered TV news anchor Walter Blunt, Stewart drinks like a fish, snorts cocaine, smokes pot, suckles a transsexual prostitute’s breast, dances with showgirls (in his dreams), gets down and dirty with Elisabeth Shue, and so much more! It’s all in the name of bringing Jonathan Ames’ latest offbeat creation to life. [Stream Blunt Talk on STARZ Play]

'Dune'

David Lynch’s Dune is one of the most divisive films ever made. While most consider it to be a massive misfire (and horrific adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci fi masterpiece), some still love it for its kitschy wild abandon. Patrick Stewart has the small, but pivotal role of Gurney Halleck. He’s a romantic warrior who is loyal to a fault. [Where to Stream Dune]

'Star Trek: The Next Generation'

Patrick Stewart is perhaps best known for playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He might seem like an iconic part of the Star Trek universe now, but Stewart had big shoes to fill. He was succeeding William Shatner’s James T. Kirk as captain of the Enterprise. Where Shatner chose to lead his crew with a boyish gusto, Stewart gave Picard a steely resolve and intellectual manner that signaled that this Star Trek would go boldly where the original hadn’t gone before. 4

'Star Trek: First Contact'

Everett Collection

Stewart has reprised the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in four films, but his most striking work was in Star Trek: First Contact. This is the movie where he wildly rants “The line must be drawn here!” See? You know which one I’m talking about. [Where to Stream Star Trek: First Contact]

5

'X-Men'

Patrick Stewart is more than a Starfleet captain; he’s an important Marvel superhero. In 2000, the famously bald thespian was tapped to play the famously bald Professor Charles Xavier. Stewart played the role with grace, intelligence, and profound empathy. Essentially, he nailed it. [Where to Stream X-Men]

6

'I, Claudius'

I, Claudius was an absolutely revolutionary television series. It’s the sumptuous adaptation of Robert Graves’ brilliant historical novels about the life of Roman emperor Claudius and featured an all-star cast, unparalleled production values (for the time), and the kind of courtly intrigue that would inspire shows like Game of Thrones. And yes, Patrick Stewart was on it. The young Stewart played Sejanus, Claudius’ best friend and one of his most cunning adversaries. [Watch I, Claudius on Acorn TV]

7

'Macbeth' (2010)

Long before he was exploring the galaxy and teaching mutants to love themselves for the murder machines that they were, Patrick Stewart was known as one of the most electrifying Shakespearean actors on the British stage. In 2010, he tackled the Scottish play. Stewart took on Macbeth for director Rupert Goold. In 2010, the BBC (and PBS) aired a film version of the production steeped in Soviet paranoia. [Watch Macbeth on PBS]

8

'Hamlet' (2009)

pat-stew-8
PBS

Stewart returned to the Bard for the RSC’s celebrated 2008 production of Hamlet, starring David Tennant as the young Dane. Stewart pulled double duty as Claudius, Hamlet’s nefarious uncle, and the ghost of Hamlet’s father. In this 2009 film version of the play, you can see how much Stewart’s natural gravitas anchors the production. [Watch Hamlet on PBS]

9

'Jeffrey'

pat-stew-9
Everett Collection

As Tyler Coates explained in his “Was It Good For The Gays?” column, Jeffrey is the rare movie about the AIDS epidemic that is also a hilarious and upbeat romantic comedy. Steven Weber plays the titular Jeffrey, a gay man who is so afraid of contracting HIV that he foregoes sex altogether. Stewart steals the show as Jeffrey’s best friend and confidant, Sterling. The character is so far from the stoic Picard that it’s an absolute delight to watch. [Watch Jeffrey on Hulu]

10

'Theatreland'

pat-stew-10
Acorn TV

In 2001, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan worked together on a celebrated production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot. While you can’t stream that extraordinary piece of art, you can watch a gorgeous and engrossing reality series about the production. Theatreland goes behind the scenes of London’s legendary Haymarket Theatre. You get to see Stewart and McKellan develop their characters, meet all the crew that keeps things going, and become privy to all the drama that takes place off stage in the wings.
