‘Marvel’s Jessica Jones’ Is Debuting On Netflix November 20 — Against Amazon’s ‘The Man In The High Castle’!

Marvel Entertainment dropped a very cool teaser this morning that confirmed that season one of Marvel’s Jessica Jones will be debuting on Netflix November 20. The short clip gives audiences a sneak peek at the show’s eerie take on crime noir.

The teaser ends with title cards that say “It’s time the world knew her name.” It’s a promise, but also a nod to the fact that Jessica Jones is a newer character in the Marvel Universe and doesn’t have the same name recognition as Iron Man, Captain America, or Daredevil. She doesn’t even seem to have a cool superhero code name! (For what it’s worth, she went by Jewel in the comics.)

Jessica Jones made her debut in the Marvel MAX comic, Alias. It was the very first “R-rated” comic from the company and the first line uttered was an uncensored “F-ck.” The series was aimed at a more mature audience and allowed writers to expose the gritty underbelly of the Marvel Universe. Jessica Jones is a retired superhero-turned-private detective who finds herself caught up in a dangerous case involving the Avengers. She turns to characters like Luke Cage (whose own series is in production) for comfort and to Daredevil for legal help. She also has to confront the demons from the past. Namely, a villain named Kilgrave, or the Purple Man, who possessed Jones’ mind and used her as his puppet when she was still a hero. The psychological and physical abuse she suffered at his hands have left her gun-shy to return to the superhero lifestyle.

It’s unclear how Marvel will adapt this story for Netflix, but we do know that Krysten Ritter‘s Jessica Jones will square off against David Tennant‘s Kilgrave on the show. Ritter recently sat down with Marvel.com to plug the upcoming series on their Weekly Podcast and divulged this about their relationship:

“It’s all twisted around and expanded upon and developed…There are elements here that are different but their whole dynamic and relationship is just a rollercoaster – the sort that makes you throw up afterwards, that flips you upside down and blows fire at you, the really awful ones!”

Fun fact: if you play back the Premiere Announcement above, you can hear Tennant creepily saying, “Jessica,” again and again in a taunting manner.

Early buzz for the show is good and expectations are high. How high? Well, Netflix has slotted the series to run in direct competition against Amazon’s hotly-anticipated The Man in the High Castle. If you’re unfamiliar with that show, it’s based on a Philip K. Dick story about an alternate universe where the Nazis and Japanese won World War II and divided the United States between them. We think it could be Amazon’s House of Cards. Picking that day to unveil Marvel’s Jessica Jones speaks highly of the project and shows that the competition between Amazon and Netflix is heating up. This might be the first time that two big streaming sites have two big premieres scheduled against each other.

Ritter also spilled on the Marvel podcast that while she hasn’t seen a finished version of the show, what she has seen is tremendous. “The stuff I did see was so rad!” she said. “It almost brought me to tears. I’m so excited to see this show and what it looks like after they sprinkle their Marvel fairy dust all over it.”

If you can’t wait for Marvel’s Jessica Jones to drop, you can pre-game by watching Marvel’s Daredevil. Eventually the Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist series are due to converge in a series called Marvel’s Defenders. Do you think they’ll be popular enough to pop up in Avengers: Infinity War? ( I DO!)
