Netflix may be a frontrunner when it comes to streaming services’ original content, breaking the mold with its wildly successful original series House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, all of which are contenders for Emmys this weekend, but it’s also beating its competitors Amazon and Hulu by producing critically acclaimed original films, particularly the Oscar-nominated documentary Virunga, which received a Best Documentary nod earlier this year. And it looks like Netflix is gearing up for another Oscar-nominated film with the narrative feature Beasts of No Nation, which is earning great reviews after premiering at Venice International Film Festival earlier this month.

The film, which takes place in a nameless African country and follows a young boy named Agu who joins a militant group amid his country’s ongoing civil war, won’t premiere on the streaming service until October 16, but it has begun to garner praise from international critics for its stunning direction by Cary Fukunaga (who won an Emmy last year for directing the first season of HBO’s True Detective) and a harrowing performance from Idris Elba. The film’s young star, Abraham Attah, also earned the Marcello Mastroianni Award at Venice, which honors an emerging actor every year. And while the film did not win the Gold Lion (the top prize at Venice), it’s currently screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, and critics are issuing extreme praise upon the film — which currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Will Netflix be able to go head-to-head against its big studio competitors and take home top prizes at the Oscars next year? It’s still early to call, but it certainly seems like Beasts of No Nation will certainly be in the running.
