The 10 Best Shows You’ve Never Heard Of!

There are too many good television shows! There! We said it!

Given that television is overflowing with masterpieces, it’s literally impossible to watch every amazing show. There just isn’t enough time. However, it’s also difficult to hear about every fantastic show. Believe it or not, but there are gems out there that not only don’t get nominated for Emmys, but they don’t even make the cut for lists of shows that should have been nominated for Emmys. Most of these are foreign shows, series that hit cable before the Golden Age of television began, or dramas that have never become popular among trendy critical circles.

Now, before we get to the list, we should warn you that you probably have heard about some of these. It’s possible if you are a devout Decider reader, that you’ve come across all of these in your online readings. However, we can just about guarantee that you haven’t bothered to watch them all — and we’re making our case for why that should change! The 10 shows on this list should be at the top of everyone’s “Must Watch List” and we’re determined to see that happen.

'Terriers'

As our own esteemed pal Joe Reid put it: Terriers was the best show that no one watched.” The brilliant crime drama cast Donal Logue and Michael Raymond-James as a pair of private detectives working together in Florida. The duo’s nuclear chemistry was only eclipsed by the wittiness of the dialogue. And yet…no one watched it. And hardly anyone remembers it. (Well, Reid remembered it.)[Watch Terriers on Netflix]

'Manhattan'

It’s mind-boggling to me that Manhattan is routinely left off of television critics’ “Best Of” lists because it’s positively sublime. The series follows the lives and lies of the men and women tasked with building the atomic bomb. It’s like Mad Men, but if they have a bad day at work, they can die. And if they have a good day at work, they’re one step closer to being able to wipe entire countries off the earth. (Oh, and everyone who’s taken this recommendation from me has sent me messages as soon as they wrap up season one asking me if there’s more. There is. Season two lands on WGN America on October 13 – and the episodes I’ve seen are better than anything in the monumental first season.) [Watch Manhattan on Hulu]

'Hana Yori Dango'/'Boys Over Flowers'

best-boysoverflowers
KBS2

Hana Yori Dango, or Boys Over Flowers, is an enchanting teen soap about a spunky poor girl who dares to stand up to the four hot rich bullies who run her prep school…and accidentally enchants the meanest one among. Complicating things in their would-be romance? She hates his guts and is in love with one of his best friends. It’s addictive and adorable and full of crazy twists and turns. It’s also one of the most insanely popular shows in the world, which is why I’ve always been completely confused why it hasn’t been adapted for a U.S. audience yet. It’s easiest to stream the Korean version — yes, there are multiple versions in multiple countries — but I am also a fan of the Japanese one. How big of a fan? I own it on DVD. 'Slings and Arrows'

best-slingsarrows

Slings and Arrows a zippy and zany show about all the drama that happens behind-the-scenes at a Canadian Shakespeare festival. Paul Gross plays Geoffrey Tennant, a brilliant actor trying to revitalize his career. The only problem is that his dead mentor is haunting him. Everyone thinks he’s losing his mind…is he? If that sounds not entirely unlike last year’s big Oscar winner, Birdman, you would be correct. Except I think Slings and Arrows is way smarter and packed with far more heart, which is why I’ve been trying to make a thing for years. [Watch Slings and Arrows on Hulu]

5

'The Returned'

best-revenants
Sundance TV

If Fear The Walking Dead has left you cold, there is an incredible French drama that truly reinvents the zombie genre. The Returned follows what happens when people who have long been presumed dead return safe and sound to the world of the living — even decades after their apparent deaths. This creepy horror mystery has been adapted for American audiences, but we think you should forego the remake and check the original French version. (Especially because season one is on Netflix and season two debuts on Sundance TV this fall). [Watch The Returned on Netflix]

6

'Borgen'

best-borgen
DR1

The easiest way to explain Borgen is that it’s a foreign take on political dramas like House of Cards and The West Wing, but that would be underselling it. Borgen kind of sparked a television drama renaissance. Since its debut, Denmark has asserted itself as the most important hotbed for creativity in drama and it’s inspired other foreign showrunners — including quite a few famous American ones — to really push the boundaries of what can be done on TV. Borgen also has a cool connection to Game of Thrones. Last season, Borgen‘s Birgitte Hjort Sørensen appeared as the cool Wilding who was killed by a posse of children in the White Walker army, and next season, Pilou Asbæk will appear as Theon’s super sexy, super dangerous uncle Euron Greyjoy. 'Deutschland 83'

best-deutschland83
Sundance TV

We told you earlier this summer that the best show in the world was invading our shores…and we aren’t sure you were listening. At least, it seemed to us like the thrilling Deutschland 83 ran its course on Sundance TV with nary a peep of buzz. The show follows Martin Rauch, a charming East German officer who is blackmailed into becoming a spy. What he thinks is one routine mission spirals out of control. Soon Martin finds himself doubting everything he ever believed in and embracing the darker side of being a double agent. [Where to Stream Deutschland 83]

'Peaky Blinders'

best-peaky
Netflix

Okay, we have assume that you’ve heard of Peaky Blinders. The brilliant British crime drama has often taken center stage on this very site and we know that it pops up in everyone’s Netflix queue every once in a while. However, it still doesn’t have nearly as much love and attention as it deserves. Most gangster stories follow a pattern and fall into cliché, but Peaky Blinders bucks every expectation at every turn. Oh, and it also features Tom Hardy in a juicy supporting role in season two. SO WHY HAVEN’T YOU BINGED IT YET? [Watch Peaky Blinders on Netflix]

9

'Danger 5'

best-danger5
Dinosaur TV

Danger 5 is an explosion of sheer absurdity that both honors and defecates on the tradition of spy serials at the same time. The zany show follows the adventures of “Danger 5,” a crack team of international agents tasked with killing Hitler. Standing in their way are mutants, dinosaurs, and cocktail hour. It’s like Austin Powers as imagined by Quentin Tarantino, and the second season only pushes the series further out into the odd ether. [Watch Danger 5 on Netflix]

10

'Top of the Lake'

best-topofthelake
Everett Collection

You might pat yourself on your back because you’ve seen creepy crime thrillers like Hannibal or The Fall, but have you ventured into the world of Top of the Lake? Jane Campion’s super weird, super upsetting, and super brilliant crime series casts Elisabeth Moss as a Kiwi detective who must return to her childhood home to uncover a mystery surrounding a pregnant 12-year-old. Yup, True Detective‘s got nothing on Top of the Lake. [Watch Top of the Lake on Netflix]
