Everything You Need To Know About The Sleek New Roku 4

Arriving this October is the brand new Roku 4 streaming player, which will feature brand-new software and app updates, 4K compatibility, and a sleek, slightly larger new console; the Roku 4 will retail for $129.99. If you’re new to Roku streaming or are already making a list of gift-worthy gadgets to buy this coming holiday season, here’s everything you need to know about the Roku 4, which CEO Anthony Wood claims is his company’s “best streaming player ever.”

First, a little background for Roku newbies. Like Apple TV, Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, or any other streaming console you can think of: Roku is here to help you stream via a device that plugs directly into your television set either through HDMI or, for you box-TV dinosaurs, auxiliary input. They feature an array of different models — Rokus 1, 2, and 3, as well as the Roku Streaming Stick — to accommodate old, new, and even their own smart TV. All devices, though different from one another, serve the same purpose of helping you stream your favorite movies and shows.

The Roku 4, available later this month, is the company’s latest addition to their streaming family. Though it may look different from previous models (the Roku 4 is larger and flatter than its predecessors), it’s proving to be their most impressive console to date. We sat down with Roku’s Director of Consumer Communications, Todd Witkemper, who walked us through everything we need to know about the Roku 4 and why, as viewers, it will help us get the most out of our streaming experience.

More, more, more… And better.

In striving to be a completely agnostic hub for streaming, Roku acquires thousands of movies and shows (300,000 to be exact, and climbing) across a wide range of streaming channels, including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Go, and more. In addition to all of the major streaming services, Roku also offers lesser-known channels like Acorn TV and Crunchyroll, plus lifestyle options that range in everything from exercise to cooking. Along with their release of the Roku 4, the company will also be releasing a software update (OS 7) that is set to roll out mid-October. This update will work on every generation of Roku hardware, mobile app and the Roku Feed, which was introduced last March to let users know when movies and shows they’ve been following will be available on streaming, along with the most up-to-date pricing. In fact, Roku features the lowest price first, including if a movie or show is available for free on a subscription-based streaming service like Netflix. In addition to its original features, the Roku Feed reboot will allow you to follow movies, shows, actors, and directors that might not be available on streaming just yet so you’re the first to know when they pop up a service. The new Feed also pushes new notifications on your Roku home screen so you don’t have to wonder when you should check for updates.

4K compatibility for highbrow, Ultra HD entertainment (or just a boost to regular HD)

For those who aren’t necessarily familiar with the advent of 4K (currently TV’s highest digital resolution available), it can freak people out. Will I need a new TV? Will I still be able to watch my favorite shows from yesteryear without them pixelating? Purchasing a Roku 4 will not require you to purchase a new TV. If you’re gadget savvy and already have a 4K TV — awesome! You’ll be able to enjoy the 4K compatible Roku 4 to its fullest potential. If not, no need to feel left out: the Roku 4 will enhance whatever it is you’re watching on your HD TV. In fact, streaming services like Netflix, which are are beginning to film their original series in 4K (just look at the latest seasons of House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black), will look noticeably sharper when streamed through the Roku 4.

Travel and college dorm-friendly

If you’re frequently on the go (or, like most college kids, kicked out of your dorm for a chunk of time at the end of every semester), the Roku mobile app is beneficial for taking your Roku player or Streaming Stick wherever you go. With Hotel and Dorm Connect, users can connect their Roku player or Streaming Stick to available wi-fi networks and start streaming right away, just like at home.

Other cool, totally handy features you’ll love

  • Remote Finder button on the top of the Roku 4 ensures you’ll never lose your remote again. Just press the button and the device will lead you to your remote using a custom sound feature.
  • Headphone jack (also available on Roku 3) on remote allows for private listening.
  • Voice search capability on remote and mobile app allows you to vocally request movies, shows, actors, and directors.
  • Curated 4K Spotlight channel that offers access to 4K movies, shows, and more.
  • Use your photos as custom screensavers through the mobile app. Or just show off your photos via the app, which includes pinch and zoom capability.

The Roku 4 will be available this October—release date still TBD—for $129.99.
