Amy Schumer has had a hell of a year so far. After breaking onto the scene half a decade ago with some scorching performances on Comedy Central Roasts, Schumer’s profile rocketed this year with the huge success of her first feature film, Trainwreck ($138MM worldwide box office), and her Emmy-winning third season of Inside Amy Schumer. Last night, she made her debut performance as the host of Saturday Night Live and, well, knocked it out of the park.
Like other stand-ups who have hosted SNL recently (Louis CK, Chris Rock), Schumer’s 8-minute monologue was the highlight of the show. Right from the get-go, she proved that even though she’s rocketed into a new echelon of celebrity, she’s not afraid to take shots at other A-Listers. Namely, the Kardashians:
Schumer described America’s first family as “a whole family of women who take the faces they were born with as a light suggestion,” before lamenting that the plastic surgery bug has now hit Khloe Kardashian. She posits that most women used to identify with Khloe (“Khloe was ours”), but now that she’s “half her body weight … She lost a Kendall!”, there’s nary a Kardashian to empathize with.
Schumer also set a new world record for double entendres in the sketch “Porn Teacher,” in which she portrayed … you guessed it … a porn teacher.
