While it’s true that the Evil Dead franchise‘s long-standing success rests solely on the shoulders of one Ash Williams (aka Bruce Campbell), its legions of loyal fans also love it because of its irreverent take on the horror genre. Modern horror films are full of somber scares or an all-too-terrifying self-awareness, but the Evil Dead is all about fun. Case in point: the new series Ash Vs. Evil Dead comes with as many laughs as it does scares.

We asked the cast of the new series if they think that horror has gotten too serious lately for its own good.

“Horror’s just too serious, period. And I get it. I get that that’s the default. Most horror is very straight,” Bruce Campbell joked before pretending to fall asleep. He added, “It can be a little boring, too! ‘Bore-or!'”

The cast all chimed in that while mainstream horror might be obsessed with the grim and gritty, Ash Vs. Evil Dead was all about getting groovy.

Lucy Lawless said, “Because of Bruce [Campbell] and because of the legacy of Evil Dead, we’ve got our own thing going on. It’s raucous and it’s distasteful and we’re proud of it!”

“What I love most about our show,” added Dana DeLorenzo, “is that it takes the horror seriously, it takes the comedy seriously, it takes the franchise seriously, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously.”
