Meet Queue: Tessa Thompson, ‘Creed’s’ Gorgeous Knockout

Did you catch Creed over the holiday weekend? If so, you probably found yourself cheering for Michael B. Jordan, crying for Sylvester Stallone, and falling head over heels for Tessa Thompson. The gorgeous Thompson played Bianca, a sweet and smart singer-songwriter struggling with hearing loss, in the film. Bianca is the person who gives Adonis Creed the inspiration to believe in himself when he enters the ring.

If you want the lowdown on Tessa Thompson, we’ve compiled a streaming dossier for you. It’s kind of like a “meet cute” in a romantic comedy, but because it’s all streaming, we’re calling it your “meet queue.” So get ready to fall in love with Tessa Thompson…

Veronica Mars Season Two (2005 – 2006)

One of Thompson’s first big breaks was on the second season of the cult smash Veronica Mars — but it may not have given her the attention she deserved. Thompson played Jackie Cook, Wallace’s love interest. However, she wasn’t beloved by the fans. While it was the show runner Rob Thomas’ intent to create a foil to counterbalance Veronica, the audience always took Veronica’s side over Jackie’s. Eventually, Thomas wrote Jackie off the show, but had nothing but praise for Thompson’s talents. [Watch Veronica Mars on Prime Video]

Copper (2012 – 2013)

Thompson’s last big television role was on the period crime drama Copper. The show marked BBC America’s first foray into original scripted television and featured Thompson as a black woman living in New York City during the 1860s. Thompson’s character, Sara Freeman, was the wife of an African-American physician on the show. The series was short-lived but gave Thompson the chance to show off her range (and how good she looks in period dress). [Watch Copper on Netflix]

Dear White People (2014)

Tessa Thompson has been wowing critics for over a decade, but her turn in Justin Simien’s Dear White People is what marked her as a future star. Thompson stars in the film festival fave as Samantha “Sam” White, a sharp and impassioned film student and college radio DJ. Sam stirs up controversy on her Ivy League campus when when she self-publishes a book critiquing the school’s racist practices. Selma (2014)

Thompson followed up her work in Dear White People with another socially conscious and brilliant film. Ava DuVernay’s Selma tells the story of the dramatic voting rights marches from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. The film features an all-star cast including Thompson as civil rights pioneer Diane Nash. Thompson is one of the strongest female voices in the film (and she works the bejesus out of the 1960s costumes). [Where to Stream Selma]

NOTE: Selma is coming to Hulu December 2015.

Creed (2015)

Right now, Tessa Thompson is burning up movie screens in Creed. As we mentioned up top, Thompson plays Bianca, Adonis Creed’s love interest in the film. The role gives Thompson a unique opportunity to combine soulfulness with her sultry side. As sensuous as Bianca’s stage act is, she is always the epitome of the girl next door (or downstairs). Thompson’s brings her own unique blend of intelligence, kindness, and strength to the part and that’s probably what makes the role soar onscreen.

Creed is in theaters nationwide right now.
