Meet Queue: ‘Brooklyn’s’ Fiercely Talented Saoirse Ronan

Have you seen Brooklyn yet? Directed by John Crowley and written by Nick Hornby, the period drama follows one Irish immigrant, Eilis (Saoirse Ronan), on her journey to the New York City borough in the 1950’s. Stunning audiences and wowing critics, 21-year-old Ronan has garnered a SAG and Golden Globe nomination for her performance after snagging the honor for Best Actress at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards earlier this year. But this isn’t Ronan’s first rodeo, as you may have come across this sharp young talent before.

If you want the lowdown on Saoirse Ronan (pronounced “Sir-shuh”), we’ve compiled a streaming dossier for you. It’s kind of like a “meet cute” in a romantic comedy, but because it’s all streaming, we’re calling it your “meet queue.” So get ready to fall in love with Saoirse Ronan…

Atonement (2007)

At just 12 years old, Ronan was hired on to Joe Wright’s essential period drama to play young Briony Tallis. That year, the budding actress earned her not just her first Golden Globe nomination for her performance in a supporting role, but also an Oscar nod. This let Hollywood and audiences know that despite having plenty to learn, this girl’s got some serious, innate acting chops.

The Lovely Bones (2009)

Following Atonement, Ronan brought every parent in American to tears in Peter Jackson’s surrealist adaptation of The Lovely Bones. Based on the harrowing novel of the same name, Ronan plays the young, impressionable Susie Salmon, who’s kidnapped and murdered but stuck in a limbo purgatory state where she watches over her family and killer for years to come. The role earned Ronan a BAFTA nomination and propelled her career even further.

The Host (2013)

Based on the lesser known novel by Twilight creator Stephanie Meyer, The Host features Ronan as ill-equipped savior of the universe, Melanie Stryder: a young woman tasked with stopping body-snatching spirits from taking over. Despite the lack of box office love, the role — along with her brutal undertaking in Hanna — pushed Ronan out of the child star realm once and for all.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

Part of Wes Anderson’s quirky WWII ensemble, Ronan played pastry chef extraordinaire, Agatha, love interest of young lobby boy, Zero (Tony Revolori). Her deeply nuanced appearance was both endearing and heartbreaking — making us empathize with young love that’s threatened by the dangers and uncertainty of war.

Brooklyn (2015)

Though the Oscar race for Best Actress is a fierce one this year between Cate Blanchett in Carol and Brie Larson in Room, young Ronan has a shot at the nomination for her role in 1950’s romance, Brooklyn. Tasked with starting over in a new city in a new country, young Eilis unexpectedly finds love and stability before having to leave it behind to return home to Ireland. Based on the novel by Colm Tóibín, Brooklyn is a surefire tear-jerker that’s not to be missed.

Brooklyn is in theaters nationwide right now.
