You’ll Never Guess Which Two Comedians Voiced BB-8 In ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

You might have done your research and figured out the physics and mechanical engineering behind how BB-8 works, but where did the adorable droid’s signature beeps and boops come from? HitFix’s Drew McWeeny attended the Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiere earlier this week and sat through the end credits to find out. McWeeney noticed that not one, but two, popular comedians showed up on the scrawl under the title “BB-8 Voice Consultant.”

Bill Hader and Ben Schwartz.

Even though he’s been killing it this year in projects like Trainwreck and Documentary Now, Bill Hader is perhaps best-known for his stellar work on Saturday Night Live. He was an incredible impressionist and created the uber-popular character Stefon with writer John Mulaney. Ben Schwartz is a talented actor, writer, and producer in his own right, but he stole the show on Parks and Recreation. Schwartz played the Tom Haverford’s loathsome friend Jean-Ralphio.

So what exactly did the two comedy heavyweights do to pull off the BB-8 voice? Hader told McWeeney that the job consisted of:

“JJ [Abrams] f*cking around with this sound effects app on his iPad that was attached to a talk box operated by me. It looked ridiculous, but it made BB-8’s voice. At first I tried doing a voice, but we all agreed it sounded too human.”

So when BB-8 rolls into your heart this weekend, remember that he’s not just a fun riff on R2-D2; He’s also the love child of Stefon and Jean-Ralphio.
