Netflix’s Smart Socks Will Make Sure You Never Fall Asleep During A Binge-Watch Again

We’ve all been there. You’ve finally decided which series you’re going to watch. You’ve ordered your take out, arranged your blankets just the way you like them, and you press play. Three episodes in and the unthinkable happens. You fall asleep, missing vital dramatic moments and losing your place in the series.

Netflix knows the struggle is real and they’re saving us again through the cutest and most useful DIY project to date: socks that can pause the show you’re watching by sensing when you fall asleep. As much as “Netflix socks” sound like the company’s sassy solution to having too much amazing content, the streaming service has actually built a prototype and created a do-it-yourself demo.

The Netflix sock uses viewers’ movements to determine whether or not it’s time for a pause. An accelerometer tells when you’ve stopped moving and are most likely off in slumberland. In the prototype, there is a warning LED light that flashes red right before it sends the pause signal, but if you move at all, the countdown is stopped.

While they’re not 100% accurate, they are fun and a better solution than accidentally sleeping through the Narcos finale for the fifth time. But more importantly, they’re achievable. With a little bit of knitting, electronics, and coding knowledge, you too can have your very own pair of Netflix socks. Check out the tutorial for yourself:

If you’re not interested in the tech-savvy part of the sock but desperately want a pair of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Pinot Noir socks for yourself, Netflix has you covered there too. You can download cozy sock templates for all of Netflix’s original content. Whether your stream obsessions are Chef’s Table, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, or Orange is the New Black, Netflix has you — and your toes — covered.
