Younger was one of the sweetest comedy surprises of last spring. The show, created by Sex and the City and Melrose Place vet Darren Star, follows what happens when a youthful-looking 40-something divorcée poses as a 20-something to land a job in publishing and restart her life. Sutton Foster shines as Liza Miller, the winsome lady in question, and is supported by a star-studded cast that includes the likes of Hilary Duff and Debi Mazar.

Now Younger is returning to TV Land for a second season that has more laughs, more drama, and yes, more sex.

“I think we were let off the leash a little more,” said showrunner Darren Star in regards to the show’s increasingly racy tone. “The first season was successful, so now we’re going to have even more fun! I think it’s that feeling that we really didn’t want to censor ourselves.”

Star Sutton Foster chimed in, “I feel like as a cast — everyone coming back this season — there’s more of a sense of play. It’s more fun. We’re more confident as we’re heading into this next season.”

The first season focused on the pressure Liza faced as she tried to keep her big fat secret totally and completely secret. At first, only best friend Maggie (Mazar) was in on the ruse, but last season ended with her hot 26-year-old tattoo artist boyfriend Josh (Nico Tortorella) discovering that he’s in love with a woman fourteen years his senior.

Star told us that he was looking forward to the “moral conundrums” Liza faces in the new season. “I think that as the relationships become stronger, more real, the lie takes up more resonance in a way,” Star said. In the premiere episode, Liza has to welcome her teen daughter home from a trip abroad and decide whether or not to come clean to Kelsey (Duff), her 20-something BFF at work. Both relationships could collapse if the truth is revealed.

“She’s not trying to dupe anybody or hurt anybody!” Foster explained. “I think it helps in this season that Josh knows. Even though it makes it more complicated, I actually think it helps because at least in that relationship, she’s come clean.”

What makes Younger so gosh darn lovable is its ability to perfectly blend sharp, sometimes screwball comedy, with real emotional depth. Friendship is one of the core themes of the show, and still Younger manages to constantly push in with bits of stringent satire. The tone is optimistic, but never naive, and always fun.

Now’s the perfect time to catch up on season one! Not only is Younger‘s sunny and funny disposition the perfect antidote to grim winter nights, but for a short time, you can binge-watch the entire first season of Younger for free at TVLand.com by clicking here.

Season 2 of Younger premieres on Wednesday January 13th at 10/9 C on TV Land.
