What could possibly be more popular on Netflix than Making a Murderer? Well, if Instantwatcher.com’s metrics are to be believed, the popular docu-series is being trampled by an hour-long video of an oscillating fan. That’s right. More Netflix subscribers are excited about watching an oscillating fan than they are about the trials and tragedies of Steven Avery.

Even though Netflix is loathe to reveal real-time ratings for its streaming platform, there is a way to track which new titles are getting more love than others. Instantwatcher.com is an independent site that logs what Netflix and Prime Video subscribers are watching. When we visited the site this morning, it appeared that Making A Murderer was the 11th most popular title of the day, while Oscillating Fan For Your Home was the 6th. (Will Ferrell’s The Spoils Before Dying currently holds the top spot.)

Netflix hypes it as “Yuletide ambiance,” but it’s really the picture perfect representation of a lazy, hazy summer day. We hear a warm purr as the fan slowly oscillates back and forth. Seagull song and the calm crashing of waves can be heard in the distance. A pair of sunglasses sits on the table next to the fan and there’s a glass full of ice.

Now you might be wondering, “Why is there a glass of ice?” Simple: It’s to prove that this video isn’t comprised of a repetitive loop. A lot of Yule Log videos make a point of letting you watch the fire burn down to the embers so you know that the film was shot in real time. Over the course of an hour, the ice melts. That’s how you know the video is real and perhaps it’s that deep-rooted integrity that’s winning over so many fans to the power of the fan.
