Amazon Will Be Live Streaming The State Of The Union 2016 Address

The State of the Union has been available to the Web for years, allowing cord cutters to stay politically in-the-know. However, in the past, the State of the Union was only available as a live stream on the White House’s site or YouTube, forcing those who had abandoned cable to huddle around their open laptops or worse — rely on the often-spotty buffering from television YouTube apps. But for the first time ever, a streaming service will be live streaming the State of the Union — Amazon.

That’s right, you’ll be able to live stream President Obama’s final State of the Union address through Amazon Video whe it airs tonight, Tuesday January 12, 2016, at 9pm ET/6 pm PT. The video is free; however, it does require you to have an Amazon account to access it. Technically, the live stream is through Amazon Instant Video, so Amazon will treat the video as a free purchase. If you’re more on an on-demand person, get ready to love Amazon even more. The 2016 State of the Union will be available to watch starting Wednesday, January 13.

According to a post from the Office of Digital Strategy, the reason for making this address available on Amazon is an attempt to bring the content to where people are, which can mean the people are on Amazon and not similar streaming platforms that allow live streaming, such as Hulu. You can read the full address from the White House here. This is definitely another win for Amazon Video. After its domination at the Golden Globes, the service seems incapable of losing at the start of 2016. Getting the White House’s stamp of approval is pretty cool in and of itself, but the partnership also holds the potential to attract new users or at least Prime members who haven’t been using Prime Video. I think we’re seeing the beginning of a beautiful streaming partnership. You can watch the trailer for the event, which has oddly sitcom-esque background music, on Amazon.
