5 Creative Couples Who Are Changing The Face Of Television

Where to Stream:

Angie Tribeca

Powered by Reelgood

Airing an epic 25-hour-long binge-watching event on TBS Sunday, January 17, is Steve and Nancy Carell’s Angie Tribeca.

Starring Rashida Jones in her first gig post-Parks and Recreation, the cop show parody series follows the comedienne as the titular Angie, a LAPD detective tasked with investigating a slew of bizarre crimes — crimes you won’t see on your average police drama. With the tagline, “Finally! A show about cops,” the husband-and-wife creators are purposely poking fun at the done to death police drama tropes and casting a few of their friends along the way. But the married creatives aren’t the only hitched showrunners changing the game. Below are five more couples who, if you’ don’t already, should acquaint yourself with because lately, their influence is spreading.

1

Jeannie and Jim Gaffigan, 'The Jim Gaffigan Show'

Husband and wife team, The Gaffigans, turned their infant-infested dysfunction (the Irish-Catholic clan has five total) into joyful sitcom, adding to TV Land’s current renaissance. Though Jeannie doesn’t star on the show alongside her husband (she’s portrayed by Ashley Williams), she does serve as a showrunner and executive producer.

Jackie Marcus and Jeff Schaefer, 'The League'

After seven seasons, fantasy football comedy The League finally blew the whistle, but not before leaving its mark. Sports lovers Jackie Marcus Schaffer and Jeff Schaffer drew up the game plan for a raunchy, semi-improvised ensemble, hired six then no-name actors – Mark Duplass, Katie Aselton, Nick Kroll, Paul Scheer, Stephen Rannazzisi, and Jonathan Lajoie — and propelled all of their careers, tenfold.

Michelle and Robert King, 'The Good Wife'

Though they’ve officially announced they’ll be stepping down after the seventh season, husband-and-wife showrunners Robert and Michelle King single-handedly raised the bar for broadcast network dramas after a significant lull in the early aughts. Since their reign in 2009, however, CBS’ The Good Wife, starring Julianna Margulies, has snagged a Golden Globe, 5 Emmys, and a plethora of nominations — so many, we lost count.

Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair, 'High Maintenance'

Dubbed “The Cannabis Couple” by adorning fans, Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair took the bond they formed at 30 Rock (Blichfeld was a casting director, Sinclair a guest star), tied the knot, smoked a boatload of weed, and created the genre-defying High Maintenance. The Vimeo web series turned newly acquired HBO comedy follows an unnamed marijuana delivery guy (Sinclair) as he bikes through the boroughs of New York City, catering to anxious urbanites for quick cash.

Molly McNearney and Jimmy Kimmel, 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'

Quickly becoming heralded as one of the most groundbreaking couples in late night TV, Jimmy Kimmel and wife Molly McNearney have made Jimmy Kimmel Live! a refreshingly diverse haven for women, specifically moms-to-be. Dubbing her creative team, the “Mom Army,” co-head writer McNearney was just one of nine women on the show to get pregnant last year. She told The Hollywood Reporter back in December that “We clean our breast pumps in the office kitchen while a 20-year-old intern named Kevin tries to avert his eyes.”
