Everyone’s heard of Don’s Plum, right? The legendary indie film that united Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Kevin Connolly, Jenny Lewis, Jeremy Sisto, Jeremy Sisto’s sister Meadow Sisto, Amber Benson, Heather McComb, and more? The movie scored by Blake Sennett of Rilo Kiley and Salute Your Shorts? The film that Variety called an “unpleasant and tedious ensemble?!?!?”
If Don’s Plum doesn’t ring a bell it’s because Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire don’t want it to. The film, filmed in 1995-1996, features a group of young friends having a rambunctious conversation at a diner. The largely improvised film paints the young, post-Titanic, Pussy Posse era DiCaprio in a very negative light —he goads women into discussing masturbation, dishes on having sex with hookers, and repeatedly describes women as “sluts” and “whores”, and even eats his own boogers (!)— and the star (along with best friend Maguire) filed legal action to stop the film from being released in North America. Don’s Plum‘s producer Dale Wheatley has been fighting against this for years and last fall started a tumblr page called “freedonsplum.com” to present his side of the story.
Well, as of this week, Wheatley has done much more. He’s made the entire film available to stream for free. (Thanks to Lainey Gossip for the heads up!)
Could this film pulverize Leo’s reputation and ruin his chances at Oscar gold? Probably not. But it’s definitely worth a peek for a slice of ’90s gossip nostalgia.
