DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is takings comic book fans on a wild whirlwind ride through time, but two of its eponymous heroes are already accustomed to traveling through the ages. Hawkman and Hawkgirl are mythic heroes who can trace their origin stories back to Ancient Egypt. There they were Chay-Ara, a priestess of a hawk god, and her lover, Khufu. After they were brutally murdered, they found themselves reincarnated again and again over the centuries. Each time they’d find each other, each time they’d fall in love, each time they’d be imbued with the powers of the hawk, and each time they’d be murdered.

Well, that is until this time.

The latest incarnations of Hawkman and Hawkgirl are Carter Hall (Falk Hentschel) and Kendra Saunders (Ciara Renée) are straying from convention. See, in this lifetime, Kendra isn’t necessarily buying the whole “we’re meant to be together forever across lifetimes” schtick because she can’t really remember it.

“I think she’s really struggling with it,” Renée told Decider after the DC Legends of Tomorrow panel at TCA earlier this month. “I think she’s worried that if she remembers it, [she’ll return to] the cycle that’s described to her of being killed every time. As soon as they find each other, they get killed together. I think she’s fighting that desperately as any person would.”

Kendra’s reluctance to succumb to fate give her incarnation of Hawkgirl an added edge. Instead of just going with the flow of a star-crossed romance, she’s going to make Carter prove his worth and devotion to her. Instead of having a neat and tidy romance, Hawkgirl and Hawkman are going to have to fight for a new kind of relationship — one that gives Kendra her own voice and free will.

Hawkman and Hawkgirl are two characters who are constantly reincarnated throughout the ages and they are appearing on a time travel show. So what are the chances that we’ll run into other versions of the heroes? “I think there’s definitely the possibility…” Renée teased. “The time traveling aspect makes it really interesting because not only are we having flashbacks from my point of view but there’s also the potential to meet ‘other mes’ and ‘other hims.'”

“Isn’t that kind of like everyone’s dream? To have another lifetime to do everything differently?” mused Renée. “We literally get that opportunity.”
