For a while, it seemed too good to be true: Netflix was bringing the cast and original creative team of Gilmore Girls back together for four movies to finally tie up the story in a truly satisfying way. Lauren Graham was back, Alexis Bledel would be there, all of Rory’s boyfriends would show up, and even Paul Anka (the dog) would be returning! The one hitch: Comedy megastar Melissa McCarthy would not be reprising her role as Sookie.

Naturally, this got people talking. McCarthy tweeted to a fan that she simply hadn’t been asked! How could that be? Showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino claimed that they had reached out to McCarthy’s people Was there bad blood there we didn’t know about? Was McCarthy too big a star to stop by Stars Hollow? Was she turning her back on where she came from?!?! WHY, SOOKIE, WHY?!?!?

Well it seems our great national crisis is over. Yesterday, both Netflix and Melissa McCarthy confirmed that a deal had been worked out and she would indeed return to Gilmore Girls.

The Hollywood Reporter picked up the fact that McCarthy confirmed the deal on Ellen. McCarthy said:

There is something I’ve been asked about so, so many times and it hasn’t worked out. They’re making four new movies of Gilmore Girls – which is a show that was near and dear to my heart for four years — and we could not get those schedules to work. And there was a whole thing and I was going to be out of the country and blah, blah, blah… And literally, an hour and a half ago, we figured out that I’m going to go back and do it and I’m so excited!

Phew! It’s happening. Though, the skeptic in us has to wonder why there was so much drama in the first place. And do you know what’s really getting us going? Why did McCarthy say the show was “near and dear to my heart for four years” when she appeared on the series for its full seven season run? Is all well in Stars Hollow? It seems that way, but we still smell something a little off.
