Amy Schumer Ridicules “Plus-Size” Controversy On ‘Tonight Show’

Comedian Amy Schumer found herself in the middle of a heated controversy a few weeks back. The hilarious star was unwittingly lumped in with plus-sized models, actresses, and musicians in a recent issue of Glamour celebrating women of all sizes. Schumer — who is about a size 6 or 8 (“plus-size” is 16 and up) — took umbrage to it on Instagram, setting off a fire storm of debate about the label.

Last night Schumer addressed the controversy with some silliness on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Schumer introduced herself to the crowd by saying, “For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a famous plus-size model.” She then began to vamp for the crowd and as the interview went on, she adopted a silly pose that soon allowed her to slide into even more ridiculous posturing. The bit made Fallon crack up.

All the while, Schumer tried to deflect some of the heat she incurred during the controversy. She said, “I love Glamour magazine. Honestly, they’ve been so nice to me, they’ve done so many great things for women. But what I learned is that people really don’t like being classified by plus-sized. We don’t need these labels. We don’t need them!” It was a diplomatic reply to a controversial topic and Schumer seemed far more excited to gab with Fallon about her new boyfriend than to dig deeper into the hot button topic.

Schumer was there to promote the upcoming fourth season of her celebrated sketch series Inside Amy Schumer. The show returns on Comedy Central on April 21.
