TMZ reports that music and movie legend Prince has passed away at the age of 57. His body was found at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota earlier today. It was public knowledge that Prince had been under the weather recently. Earlier this week, his private jet was forced to make an emergency landing due to a medical emergency. He also had to cancel two concerts due to illness. However, his reps insisted that Prince only had a bad case of the flu. On April 16, Prince appeared on stage to tell fans that he was fine. Details are scarce at the moment as to the true cause of death, but his publicist confirmed the news to the Associated Press this afternoon.
Prince was notoriously anti-streaming. That’s why it’s hard to find his music on Spotify unless a song appeared on a soundtrack or compilation. For instance, you can listen to his heart-wrenching version of “A Case of You” on an all-star Joni Mitchell tribute album (by clicking here!), but you can’t stream “Little Red Corvette.” However, you can stream his films and many of his television appearances.

Prince, whose full name was Prince Rogers Nelson, was a pioneer in every aspect of the entertainment industry. He was an incredibly prolific song-writer and his music blended together genres in an innovative way that paved the way for modern pop and R&B. He followed in the footsteps of icons like Elvis Presley and the Beatles and took his talents to the silver screen. Purple Rain remains not only a formative pop album, but a critically-acclaimed musical film. Prince made two more films: Under The Cherry Moon and Graffiti Bridge.

Prince’s hold on pop culture is astronomical. His music has popped up in key moments in films such as Pretty Woman and Baz Luhrmann’s experimental William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet. Recently, he appeared as himself on New Girl. Prince also provided the soundtrack for Tim Burton’s Batman. The film features an amazing scene where Jack Nicholson’s Joker destroys an art gallery while pumping Prince’s music. Again, you can experience the music by watching the film on Netflix.
