We’ll also be alerting you to the week’s major releases on second-run VOD. All so you can have a better weekend!

VOD Pick of the Week

We are just on the edge of being TOO fired up about how great director Karyn Kusama’s The Invitation is, but it’s honestly so fantastic. As suspenseful as anything you’ll see this year, The Invitation throws ten old friends together in a house in the Hollywood Hills, mixes in some cult spirituality, the hauntings of a tragedy that some characters haven’t gotten over, and an ominous sense of isolation. And then it wraps it all up in the best ending of any movie you’ll see this year. The less you know about it going in, the better, so just watch it this weekend and thank us later.

In Theaters and At Home

Zoe Saldana’s performance as Nina Simone in Nina has been massively controversial since the film’s poster was first released (if not before). That poster showed Saldana in dark-skinned makeup and with facial prosthetics to have her look more like Simone. People were not happy, particularly given the additional optics that the principals behind the camera, including director Cynthia Mort, are white. Nina is not available to rent or buy on VOD so you can see for yourselves if all the controversy was worth it.

Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury RoadX-Men: Apocalypse) is the major draw in Kill Your Friends, a sex/drugs/bad behavoir movie about people you probably wouldn’t want to be friends in real life fueling the Britpop music craze. Hoult is the real deal, though, and after Mad Max, he’s probably due the benefit of the doubt.

Emma Watson co-stars with Daniel Bruhl (Rush) in the based-on-true-events Colonia, a story about a woman who infiltrates a religious sect in order to search for her missing boyfriend. Cults are honestly so hot right now.

Leonardo DiCaprio finally got that Oscar, and if you haven’t seen the film that made it happen for him, The Revenant is not available to rent. The hardships! The wildlife! The suuuuuuper gross-looking makeup! It’s all there, plus Tom Hardy doing the craziest accent you ever did hear.
