Justin Timberlake told us that it’s gonna be May, and he was right. May is here, which means your favorite streaming services are packed with brand new, must watch shows and movies. This month is an especially great one for classic movies and Netflix Originals.
Whether you’ve been anxiously waiting for Season Two of Bloodline or Chef’s Table or you’re in the mood for an innovative new comedy, Netflix’s upcoming Originals have you covered. But that’s not all. This month also marks the return of Sixteen Candles and Zoolander to the service as well as the addition of fun, early 2000s classics like Bring It On. 'Sixteen Candles' (1984)
Few things can make you feel better than a good John Hughes movie, and this is one of the best. Starring Molly Ringwald, this classic romantic comedy will make you incredibly happy that you’re far from high school. Queue it up in preparation for an ‘80s movie marathon.
'Bloodline' Season 2 *Netflix Original
Pour yourself your tropical drink of choice and get ready to settle into some drama. Bloodline is coming back this month in all of its sweaty Florida Keys glory. This drama follows the Rayburns, a family who is as obsessed with blood loyalty as they are with keeping secrets and fighting for their inheritance. Just because you live in a vaycay spot doesn’t mean your life is a vacation. Start catching up on all the deception now.
'Pleasantville' (1998)
If you’ve ever wanted to live in your favorite TV show, then you’ll be able to relate to this 1998 comedy-drama. A mysterious TV repairman sends a high school student (Tobey Maguire) and his sister (Reese Witherspoon) into his favorite 1950s family show. Directed by Gary Ross and produced by Steven Soderbergh, this blending of smart social commentary and lighthearted humor is the perfect film to watch when you need to relax.
'Chelsea' *Netflix Original
She’s unfiltered, she’s brutal, and she’s finally back in the talk show limelight. Chelsea Handler‘s new late night talk show, Chelsea, premieres this month, and it looks promising. This will be Netflix’s first time producing a late night TV show, which will run three nights a week. Based on the press releases that have come out so far, it looks like Handler will be taking full advantage of Netflix’s big budget and international connections. Fingers crossed this late night show is on par with Chelsea Lately.
'Chef’s Table' Season 2 *Netflix Original
Whether you’re a diehard foodie or you just like looking at those oh-so-mesmerizing GIFs of food creation, you’re going to be excited about this one. Netflix’s original docu-series about critically acclaimed chefs from around the world is back with a new season. Pick up some cooking wine and some drinking wine, and get ready to fall in love with food.
'Bring It On' (2000)
This movie perfected the art of combining high school comedy with kickass dance routines. Starring Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union, this sports comedy about competing cheerleading squads is the perfect light hearted teen watch you need in your life. Remember to be aggressive, b-e aggressive.
'Marseille' Series Premiere *Netflix Original
Described as a French House of Cards, Marseille is Netflix’s latest foray into the seedy world of fictional politics, and it looks promising. Marseille is created by Dan Franck, a French novelist and screenwriter, and stars the critically acclaimed Gérard Depardieu (The Last Metro, Police, The Man in the Iron Mask, Life of Pi). The eight-part series follows what happens when the mayor of Marseille enters a war of succession with his former protege turned rival. We can feel the deception and corruption from here, and we’re loving it.
'Grace and Frankie' Season 2 *Netflix Original
This best friend duo is back, and we’re hoping this season’s adventures are going to be just as fun as last season’s. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin star as the titular frenemies who learn to be friends after their husbands run away with each other. Whether you love or hate the premise, one thing is for sure — watching Fonda and Tomlin back in action is a delight.
'The Keeping Room' (2014)
The Civil War drama that you may have missed is now on Netflix. The movie follows two Southern sisters (Brit Marling and Hailee Steinfeld) and a slave (Muna Otaru) as they defend themselves against Union Army soldiers. But be warned if you’re looking for a lighthearted watch. The Keeping Room is so dark and brooding, critics called it apocalyptic.
'Lady Dynamite' Series Premiere *Netflix Original
Comedian Maria Bamford finally has her own official show, and we couldn’t be more excited. Lady Dynamite is about a woman who’s incredibly close to her big break but who may break down in the process. However don’t let the vague description drive you away. Bamford is a comedian’s comedian who has been producing consistently innovative, heartfelt, and most importantly funny work for years. If anyone can deliver a groundbreaking quirky comedy that will make your spirit happy, it’s this comedy orchid.
